Why do you think Kyman gets so much hate? I can understand some things about what people don’t like about it but some of the things they say, the harassment is so out of pocket. Especially on Tik Tok! It is like a battle ground out there and they all will shoot you down immediately if you SAY anything. I just wanna love Kyman without it seeming like a punishment 😭😭

Dude I totally feel you. It's so much easier to live and let live so I don't understand how these ppl have the energy to be so aggressively hurtful all the time. This has been said before ad nauseum but for god's sake, it's JUST a fucking tv show. I'm too old for this shit.

Why Do You Think Kyman Gets So Much Hate? I Can Understand Some Things About What People Don’t Like

(longer explanation under the cut! like... extremely long lol I'm so sorry my thoughts about this have been building up for a while šŸ˜…)

I think the extremely aggressive kyman hate is a symptom of growing poor media literacy and the larger "purity culture" trend that's been present online for a while now. It's very reminiscent of American Evangelicalism or Puritanism, where members of the church have to follow a very specific set of rules for behaving and thinking and if you deviate from those rules in the slightest, you're shot down immediately by the community and shamed for being sinful and blasphemous, all to keep you on the "righteous path" and avoid burning in hell for eternity. This is why so many puritanical christians in the US hate themselves for doing what most of the world sees as normal behavior, and simultaneously force that self-hating worldview onto others to "save" them. (For example see this video by FD Signifier on youtube explaining how hardcore religious ppl/conservatives are doomed to be bad in bed because they see sex as "evil" when in reality it's a normal part of human behavior 😬 It's long but very good).

Though, it's important to note that ppl who think this way may not even be christian themselves, but the behavior is so pervasive in american culture that you absorb it even if you're not a puritanical christian. (for example, to quote Ian Danskin, athiests may think "I don't believe in god, but the god I don't believe in is Jehovah). Tons of the first generation of white USAmericans were exiled British puritans who were kicked out of their home country for essentially being self-righteous assholes and trying to force their shit worldview on everyone else lmao. And I think because so many online spaces are so USAmerican-centric, people from all over the world have started adopting that purity culture as well.

Now, South Park is extremely popular (duh). It's been around for decades so it has a ton of fans both old and new. Unfortunately a lot of new fans, especially young people, follow the show for very different reasons than the average normie/not-terminally-online viewer does. They take the characters out of their original context, use them like dolls to make their own stories and fan content, and ignore all the other blatantly controversial shit that's been going on in the show since day 1 (which is why so many exclusively make blasƩ creek fanworks imo). They want to keep their thoughts "pure" and only engage with content that's approved by the puritanical online community

It's extremely fitting but also sad that Cartman is the scapegoat for everything wrong with South Park, both in the show and in the real world. Either ppl don't want to acknowledge he exists, or ppl latch onto him and project all of that puritanical hatred toward him or anyone that likes his character. Hell, even I'M guilty of this kind of thinking before I watched the show and understood Cartman's character better.

Kyman in particular is a target BECAUSE it involves Cartman, but also because people boil it down to shipping a nazi with a jew which, at the surface level, seems horrible! But if you've ever actually WATCHED the goddamn show, you know that is an extremely reductive and inaccurate interpretation of their characters. It's horribly poor media literacy. These ppl CANNOT seem to comprehend that you can enjoy watching a character who's a "bad person" without condoning their actions, and that enjoying the shipping dynamic of such characters DOES NOT make you a bad person by proxy.

A huge role of fiction as media is to explore ideas that may be harmful in the real world in a safe way because... *gasp* it's imaginary!! It makes you think and experience emotions you may not have the opportunity for otherwise! However, in the eyes of puritans, the fact you're even thinking about something like that makes you a sinner. It's a thought crime, which is why they consider us mentally "sick" for shipping kyman. So, they send hate at the drop of a hat and publicly vilify kyman shippers to reinforce that behavior with each other, all to say "Hey look at me!!! I'm a Good Person! see how much of a Good Person I am??? I'm gonna go to HEAVEN, and YOU'RE going to HELL". Like I said before, it's not that they necessarily believe in heaven or hell, but that's the general root of the behavior. It's performative puritan dog-piling. Also, because they haven't even fucking watched the whole show, they conveniently ignore all the other horrible shit the show portrays because random kyman shippers online are easy targets while Matt & Trey are gajillionaires who are essentially un-cancellable for things they do on the show at this point because, to quote Trey: For anyone to go up and go "Did you see this thing on South Park? That was really offensive" someone's gonna be like "Dude shut up šŸ˜’ that's just South Park".

Geez man this got super fucking long lmao. But my advice is to please take care of yourself because, and this super clichĆ© to say, but FUCK the haters dude šŸ–•šŸ–•šŸ–• You're engaging with media that brings you joy and exploring interesting ideas with a community of awesome artists/writers/meta-analysts and more. This is supposed to be FUN!! Anyone who tries to take that away from you or shame you into stopping is a fucking immature, holier-than-thou asshole who needs to get a fucking life. The block button is your friend, so use it early and often. You have the power to curate your own online space, and you shouldn't subject yourself to dealing with these dickheads (this is a big reason why I don't have a tiktok lol)

Good luck dude, and keep on shipping kyman šŸ˜ŽšŸ¤˜ā¤ļøšŸ’š

i think its funny how kyle spend like 25 seasons trying to make cartman a decent person and fighting him every step of the way but all it took for stan was a few tears and cartman was immediately saving that pangolin

this intrigues me, not only because cartman has been acting nicer in the past few seasons, but its proven in the post covid how he actually CARES FOR HIS BROS????! and besides the sacrifice rabbi cartman did, the pangolin thing was one of the only actual kind things eric has ever done. he gained nothing from it, in fact, HE LOST what he wanted. eric cartman gave up on his antisocial life so stan could live a normal life again. thats... unheard of?

also in cupid ye he just inserts himself in the situation solely because he hates seeing stan sad. Cartman has a soft spot for stan (and arguably kenny), but he is a piece of shit to both butters and kyle, probably because he knows the two of them can keep up. i think its nice how his fucked up mind works

literally one piece

its one of the most emotional deep media we have out there, exploring all the nuances and contradictions of human interactions and dynamics, diving DEEP on connection and relationships

not one of the main relationships explored is romantic. ALL OF THEM ARE EITHER PLATONIC OR FRATERNAL!!! AND IT SHOWS HOW DEEPLY IMPORTANT THIS RELATIONS ARE!!!

(i know in whole cake island we really get to know pudding and sanji but the main thread of the arc is FAMILY so really i can get past that disaster. also it constantly points out how romance IS NOT the ultra form of love, romance is NOT what guide sanji after all and hes the arguably most romantic character. one piece teaches us all kinds of love are as meaningful if not more than romance)

god i just love it when a story treats a completely platonic relationship with the same level of narrative importance as if it were a romantic relationship

LIKE YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! Platonic bonds are just as if not even more important than romantic bonds!!! LIKE YES A FRIENDSHIP CAN BE LOVE STORY AND THAT CAN NOT BE CONTRADICTORY STATEMENT TO SAY!!!

OH MY GOD on the toxic episode in season 3, when toxic morty is dying toxic rick says "GRANDPA'S HERE"

does he consider this subconsciously desire to be morty's granpa a toxic trait? does he secretly wants to be a source of comfort for morty? does he?!?!?!?!?

y’know, now that I’m thinking about it… Morty rlly never has called Rick ā€œGrandpa Rickā€ before, has he? The closest we have is season 6 ep 1 which is admittedly very nearly the same thing lol, and then we have cop morty actually calling cop rick it. but idk, I just feel like Morty calling Rick by the actual title rather than just confirming he has it would hit specifically me very differently. like, god, ow. just thinking about morty being like ā€œgrandpa rick! grandpa rick!ā€ makes me angst tbh. would rick himself have a reaction to it, considering how he kinda had one when morty told him straight up rick was his grandpa to him? does rick…. even kinda wish morty would call him that, or even just call him it more? does rick subconsciously refer to himself as ā€œgrandpaā€ in the third person to try and insert the idea in mortys head??? his drunken sappy and emotional thoughts had to have gone this way at least once like cmonnnn

ok here i am again with another meta analysis for rick and morty season 6 because of course my obsession phase isn’t over yet

apparently this season is a lot focused on the family smith. it was a big hypothesis when he only had the titles for the season to base our opinions on, but also when it started to air it was pretty clear ALL the smiths are the main focus on this season. the dynamics they have as a family, the nuances, the ups and downs, how they (dis)function - it appears to be explored very heavily this season. lately (a little bit in season 5 too) all five of them seem to be treated as a family, and not just a bunch of people that happen to live together.

which is nice, i really appreciate it, especially because they seem to mix that with sci-fi stuff and humor and honestly i couldn’t ask for anything else (i can’t be the only one laughing the shit off myself this season all the jokes are landing to me please)

my point is, i wonder if the reason why they decide to explore this theme so much is due to quarentine.

right now the smith family are stuck with each other. with the portal gun broken, rick and morty can only go so far in their own dimension, and since they can’t afford to screw things up, they really seems to be doing things tamer and less dangerous than before. in other words,Ā they have nowhere to run and rick needs to deal with his family more often now.

this sounds A LOT like quarentine to me. you going a little bonkers, but also needing to deal with your peer’s crazyness as well. it’s the time you need to confront how disfunctional your family really is but how you love them so deeply you have no other option but to endure them. (i’m talking about non-abusive homes here, please). personally, i think i got a lot closer to my parents and brother after this hell, and it seems fitting the writers went through that as well.

considering season six was written during a more flexible but still real part of the lockdown, i find it a good hypothesis they decide to write the show analog to what was happening in the real world. the smith family can go to school, work, go out to ice cream, but at the end of the day there’s not a lot they can do but to be under the same house for long period of time -Ā  they can’t travel, they can’t pretend their problems don’t exist, they can’t go out often. they need to confront each other.

with this new premiere for episode 4, night family, it got really clear to me how they are willing to just dive deep into the family dynamics, making it more smith-centric. it has been a common theme that rick is acting more like a grandpa rather than a crazy asshole scientist lately, how beth is actually willing to be a good mother now, how jerry is finally being assertive about his place in his home, how morty and summer seems to have a more love-hate bond than just a i-cant-stand-you bond. they are still all fuck ups in their respective areas, they are still horrible people, but they are their OWN horrible people

also the fact that the smith family CHOOSE each other rather than just accept they need to live together adds a new layer to things. no one is from that reality, in the first episode they had the choice to be in their origin dimension if they wanted to and they’ve had tons of opportunities to just walk away before. after a long, long jurney with the same people since half the season 1 (and this jerry from season 2), we can say that the smith family aren’t connected because rick is a control freak, but because they do love each other and this is their burden to carry. in the end, family is a burden you can’t throw away, but it’s your burden and i love that.

and the fact that they actively made the choice to keep each other close is so much nicer than whatever the abusive dynamic they had in later seasons. it’s a found family, they became a found family even if disfunctional as hell. i love that

Did any of us actually expect to be Rick and Morty fans? lol. I feel like everyone's story starts with "Well, I avoided that show for ages because the fans were terrifying and some of the world's douchiest people like it, but it's so popular that I decided I'd give it a try, and..."

yeah, i see where you're coming from. season 5 was a MESS, it was the weakest season in terms of episodic adventures but also horrible to serialization and the storyline. i see what they tried to do but it was so rushed i didn't feel anything at all besides maybe anger? their toxic relationship deserved an actual discussion about it, not some half assed metaphor with crows or something. i think they didn't want to be too sappy but when you're literally discussing the basis of their dynamic you kind of need to assert that it goes both ways and not just Morty being unhealthy clingy to his grandpa.

also, i don't want to judge too fast the fact that Morty lost his assertiveness because the creators did say it's going to be one of the main storylines this season, so I'm hoping the dive more into Morty's character and his codependency. i dislike his characterization in season 5 as well but overall i really like his development. he became smart and clever enough to survive most situations and I've been noticing how recently they try to treat Morty more like a kid than a horny stupid sidekick. most of his actions makes sense once you think that he's 14 and extremely traumatized to the point of no return, he literally have no choice now but to embrace his life of adventures and ocasional murder, but he still feel adolescence emotions and honestly I'm glad. i really disliked Morty in season 1, honestly, because of his passive role, and while his relationship with Rick became more complicated over time, Morty still his own person even if deeply dependent on someone.

youve made very good points about rick's new passive role and i agree, although i dont think they try to make rick redeemable. its never going to be a perfect family and hes always going to intoxicate the people around him with his crazy bullshit, but the message they tried to convey, at least in season 5 and 4 (and keep talking in season 6) is that they choose rick even with his fucked up self. instead of making rick double down to a regular grandfather, they just made the whole family interdimensional fuckers while rick doubled down to be more loving towards them. which its not by any means a good or normal thing, but the word family has been used a lot in the latest seasons and honestly, if i had to pick, the new family dynamics overall was what saved season 5 to me. choosen family, considering they all had their opportunities to walk away but still they decide to stick close to each other. its not a healthy dynamic, they are all horrible people (especially rick) but i think thats kinda the point.

and yeah, they fucked up big in season 5, but s6 seems so refreshing and new that i really do think they are going to fix this stuff that left bitter tastes in our mouths.

your analysis is very good as well!! i tried not to think too hard about the last season's flaws but i guess some things we have to adress, it was a shit show. i remember distinctly thinking "oh season 6 is out? ill watch ironically because rick and morty has becoming so bad recently" and then i was positively surprised. im aware things can go really bad this season but im hopeful

ok but rick prime was conceptually a genious move by the writers, i think. i know jack shit abouy writing but hear me out

our s6 C-137 rick is not the same as season 1 or s2 rick, he has matured, regressed, getting softer, angrier, older. it has been a commom complain by the dudebros that rick is not that badass emotionless characters that he was before, because in the latest seasons the writers are trying to explore how miserable and lonely the smartest man in the universe really is. he’s not a god anymore, hes a pretty fucking sad dude that tries desperately to stay in control, and that has been getting on some fans nerves, apparently

some people really miss nihilistic asshole rick. but instead of regressing his character, they decided to create prime rick.

prime rick is everything C-137 tried to be. he’s funny, unhinged, heartless, brutal, and the list goes on and on. he’s what we thought season 1 rick was. and i think thats genious because now not only we can explore this new contrast between two ricks, but also is a huge opportunity for more badass cool fights

at the same time that we can keep developing c-137 rick as a character, we can also have a heartless, god-like amazing (prime) rick that was what we had in season 1 and 2. it’s a nice throwback, especially because so far this season seems so much similar to the first seasons, except now our perception of the smith family has changed drastically. and now that we got this far, we can finally see them by old lights

it both pleases the character bunnies such as me but also brings in renewed philosophical tropes to the nihilistic tone enjoyers that also made a huge part of the fanbase. the dudebros can have their rick back

in season 4 and 5 the writers seemed confused with what they wanted to do with our beloved rick and morty - are they regressing or evolving? are they serialized? are they episodic? - and while i think s5 suffered more with pacing issues due to this indecision, i think they finally got the tone right. this season is so promising!! we only have 2 episodes so far (another one tonight) but i already have the urge to re-watch them, such a thing i didn’t have every since season 3

not to mention an ā€œevil rickā€ being our next villain right after ā€œevil mortyā€ is so damn cool, especially because prime rick is evil because he doesn’t gives a damn, while evil morty is evil because he grew up in a system that does not give a damn. evil morty wasn’t the real evil, he was a product of it. and now we are facing the true evil himself, and i cant wait!!

so, overall. good play on the contrast, rick and morty writers, yall rock.

(also, at the same time they obligy our rick to confront his worst, ā€œregressedā€ version, we also have our morty confronting his regressing version too, hence the second episode A Mort Well Lived. something tells me they are going to really deep dive into their development this season)

((they really seems to be making this parallels to season 1 and 2, ANOTHER EXAMPLE BEING THE WHOLE FAMILY BURING THEIR BODIES IN THE BACKYARD LIKE THAT SCENE WAS SO COOL I LOVE THEIR FOUND FAMILY SO MUCH WHAT IS THIS))

Never thought I’d say this, but Rick and Morty now has one of the most unique found families I’ve ever seen, and it’s all weirdly wholesome that they decide to stick together (by burying dead versions of themselves in an alternate reality, might I add) even after being transported back to their original dimensions, even deciding to go get Jerry.

They really went and said, ā€œWe’re all bad people but we literally have no one else to rely on so Bless This Mess,ā€ and I am here for it.

I love the practicality of Luffys crew

Like from a tactical sense; Luffy as captain is immune to blunt attacks and is fairly adept at hand to hand contact being absolutely feral. His biggest (and most obvious) weakness is that he is susceptible to slashing attacks. So he’s got 2 choices, learn how to sword fight OR get a really good swordsman, so he picks up a guy who just happens to WANT to be the greatest swordsman.

Cool, next weakness of Luffys (from a capture/arrest/ damage perspective) is distance attacks. Yes he’s immune to bullets and cannon balls but a sneak attack or a bullet aimed above/near him would be a good choice, so he then picks up a sharpshooter. And not just any, this one is the son of a commander of an emperor of the Sea…who also happens to be the best sharpshooter.

Next Luffy is not the best at specialized hand to hand combat. Sure he’s able to carry his own for a long way but waves of marines means special forces and eventually even Luffy is going to run into someone who could pose a problem due to energy expenditure, so he picks up a cook who happens to be the protege of a captain who sailed the grand line and was renouned for his special fighting techniques (plus bonus long lost family powers)

Then to round it off, he picks a navigator who has fought pirates/marines her whole life, who can read the water and wind in a way that even fish men envy and who can provide you with the best path of escape each and every time. Not to mention she has some hand to hand combat skills + wind/weather powers to create some specialized sneak/power attacks

Just…from a marine/ tactical standpoint, I’d be shitting myself from just East Blue Crew alone. Not to mention a doctor from island of doctors who can speak to animals and turn into a giant monster, an archeologist who can read the secrets your government spent 800 years hiding and who grew up an assassin, a shipwright who not only trained under the man who built the previous pirate kings ship but who also doubles as an armoury whenever needed, an 8ft sword wielding skeleton who can summon attacks from hell and a literal rogue warlord who happens to be the strongest fishman still in universe (thus far) in a world that heavily depends on devil fruit users to keep piece. And that’s not including all Luffys allies over his journey…

Like damn…no wonder people dub him a 5th warlord. Half his crew alone causes a shit ton of damage (dressrosa, WCI) so I’m REALLY excited for Wano to be a game changer in how the world sees this little, goofy, but terrifyingly competent pirate crew

I think I've written something about it before but I can't find it so I'll ramble about it again.

I adore the idea of Zoro sharing his earrings with the crew. Let me explain this a little bit...

Zoro is a lot of things and oddly possessive is one of them. He doesn't feel the need to yell to the world that the crew is his but they are.

And the crew loves Zoro.

There's a lot of well known people on their ship, all very good in their areas. They each have identifiable things about them, none so much as Luffy's strawhat but some are very close.

So somehow, between all their adventures and the rolling ocean, a new tradition of sorts is born. And it starts with a hat and is joined by an earring.

The person or people going by themselves or on a potentially more dangerous part of their adventures, are occasionally given the responsibility of holding onto one of Zoro's earrings for him.

It's as sweet as it is terrifying. Because Zoro likes to make them sweat as he makes sure they know what he'll do if they lose it, but they also know it's his way of saying he'll find them no matter what. It's a promise that Zoro will tear his way down to hell in a twisted path of misdirection to find them, his earring and his crewmate. He will kill until the ocean around them is red and there isn't enough salt in the sea to purify the earth from what he did to get them back.

It's a unexpectedly heavy thing, the little gold earring that gets dropped in their palm. Heavy with promise and protection, with blood, sweat, and dreams

They've crossed paths with a lot of people who trust in a lot of different things while on their adventures. Lots of things people hold onto for good luck or faith or protection. They will say a strawhat and a gold earring aren't necessarily the weirdest things to have complete and unwavering trust in but it's up there.

They get use to how the earring chimes slightly when they move and the way it catches the eye. After all, it's a pretty piece of jewelry and probably worth a decent amount of money. They feel important wearing it, just like they do when Luffy sets his hat on their head.

Look how much I'm loved. Can you see how we carry each other with us? There is gold in my skin and a crown on my head and neither are mine but I've never been more rich.

There's something to it, more than the way the scent of Sanji's cigarettes, Nami's perfume, or the oil of Franky's gears clings to their skin. More than how Robin's devilfruit is always watching over them or how Chopper's hair always sticks to their clothes. It's more than Usopp's voice telling stories in their ears or Brook's music getting stuck in their head.

Zoro's earrings are a claim as much as Luffy's hat. A blessing from the first mate of the future pirate king that says minecrewfamilyyouaresoimportant all in a single golden gleam.

Sometimes Luffy comes back after a big fight, bloody and smiling, strawhat barely hanging on his head and gold waving from his ear.

Nami stands in a storm yelling directions and the earring whips against her skin in the wind, her eyes are as bright as the lightening as she guides her crew.

Usopp readies a shot, heartbeat as steady as his hand and the brush of metal against his cheek a reminder of the trust they have in him.

Chopper swings his head, slowly getting familiar with the odd way the swinging metal clinks against his antlers and how each movement makes the scent of metal flare up and the image of Zoro comes to mind.

Sanji burning and ready to spring forward to keep fighting, fire warmed gold almost too hot in his skin and a surge of affection that almost burns more.

Franky looming huge and loud in his fights, everything about him bright and loud and metal but the small gold in his ear still shines brightest.

Brook looking haunting with his sword and ice, bones clinking and an earring singing it's own soft noise as it shifts against the place he's pinned it to his clothes since he doesn't have ears yohohoho and the metal gets cloudy in the cold air.

Robin tilting her head to consider her opponents, the demon in her cooing at the golden gift she's been briefly given and demanding she finish up quick and go find her family.

Zoro always takes the earrings back once everything has been settled, the jewelry so very tiny in his hands. Something that special always looking strange in his scarred and calloused hands.

Sometimes he lets them keep the earrings for days. Somehow he knows that they need a reminder they're safe and they made it out of whatever wild situation they'd found themselves in. He always comes asking for it but never before they're ready to let it go.

He wears it better than all of them anyway, they couldn't keep it even if they wanted to. The gold is most at home against the warm tones of Zoro's skin and it adds an elegance to him just like his swords. The way the three earrings bump against each other when they're all in and that chime is Zoro, so comforting in the same way the smell of salt and metal is.

I Think I've Written Something About It Before But I Can't Find It So I'll Ramble About It Again.

Usopp decides Nami's big hoops make him look more like a pirate and steals them regularly. She is not pleased.

Franky also gets his nipples done.

Chopper has little ones that looks like cherry blossoms.

Luffy gets a pair like Law, who absolutely refuses to acknowledge their existence and had just turned around and walked away the first time he saw Luffy wearing them.

Robin has an ever growing collection and they can't figure out where she keeps getting them. Seriously none of them have ever seen her buy any where do they keep coming from.

Brook tells bad ear jokes daily.

Sanji only wears one small diamond earring, and will occasionally swap it out for a little silver hoop.

I gotta say. One Piece is one of the few animes that doesn't provoke "canon is not real unless I like it" syndrome on me. I really love the story as a whole, I really don't need fanon all that much

There is, however, one detail I pretend I do not see: The timeline. Like, the actual timeline. How much time had passed.

No, I'm not talking about timeskip.

*Grabs Eiichiro Oda by his neck* What do you MEAN it passed ONE MONTH between the Reverse Mountain and Water 7?

No no, this can't do. You're telling me the straw-hats had been sailing for two months top?? Nah, nah, nah. You don't understand them like I do. IN MY OPINION:

East Blue lasted two months, maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more.

Then after Chopper they sailed for like 4 more month's to get to Water 7/Ennies Lobby.

Immediately after that came Thriller Bark. Skeleton acquired. Then they went on off screen adventures for like a month. (I refuse to believe Brook found friends just to lose them a few days later on Saboady)

The separation marked 7, maybe 8 months together. That's a good amount I think. I know they see each other 24/7 and that's more than enough time to create strong bonds but they spend 2 years away from each other. That's a lot of 24/7's apart. I want them to have time together.

Because it has been 20 years of One Piece and I still think we have few nakamaship moments. And that is saying something seeing the whole One Piece is one big nakamaship centric slice of life fanfiction.

If Sanji ever hits a woman, his character is ruined forever

How I, as a woman, came to enjoy Sanji's chivalry trait even if I dislike it.

Now, notice how I said "chivalry" and not "pervet", because I actually quite enjoy his morals, but i fucking loathe his gags with the nose blood and all. This perverted size I do my best to ignore and at the very least tolerate, because I honestly believe Sanji's good character traits surpass this goddamn bad bits.

(This is going to be a long long essay, because I’ve been thinking about that Black Maria fight again and I wanted to give my two cents to his character development in detriment of my calculus exam tomorrow which I haven’t studied one bit. Also there’s going to be no images because I don’t fucking know how Tumblr works I’m new)

So, about his chivalry and the whole "won't hit a woman thing".

At first, I was very pissed about it. If it was in any other piece of media, not hitting a woman (as much as its a double standart) it's not exactly bad per se. It's not something I would applaud but rather think it's a failed flex of the writers to show themselves Oh So Manly and So Full of Outdated Morals. Regardless, not all that much of a bother. In real life, not hitting a woman is a thing and its not a bad one, since not every woman is able to GG combo a 6 foot tall jerk. And depending on how close your fictional world is to real life, this chivalry becomes more and more justified.

But One Piece is not your everyday fantastical fictional world. It's a whole ass big planet that keeps on moving with its own rules, physics and culture. A world a lot bigger than our own that expends to metaphysical standards. In One Piece, even if regular woman are shown to be a tad weaker than most regular man, its not by a lot when these randoms could die to an actual strong character to the same swing of a sword.

However, when Oda shows strong, powerful characters, they are so regardless of their gender. And One Piece has some STRONG female characters. I mean painfully strong. In a planet so big as theirs, its not a surprise woman has taken some Big Girl Pills. I don’t think it's up to discussion that woman can be seen as deadly powerful in this world as man.

But as refreshing as it is, this gender roles in One Piece come crumbling down once you add this chivalry shit.

Because when you have big women villains that can eat a whole island in two seconds, or women that can murder a whole army with one move, having a character refusing to fight feels demeaning. It’s like you are underestimating these powerful lads that can literally kill your nakama. What, you don’t think they can actually do damage to you, you fucking prick?

And it’s contradictory, to show these woman so strong and yet be seen so weakly by characters you were supposed to like. It feels demeaning to them, and it feels demeaning to you, a 12yo that was starting to really like see these woman achieving so many big things.

And Sanji is one of those characters you were supposed to like. Because he’s funny, strong, kind, a good cook, a good friend, a person you would love to know in real life. But still, he has this flaws that ick you so fucking much, flaws that get more and more evident as the story progresses.

Don’t get me wrong, I love OP, I have a tattoo of One Piece, Sanji is one of my favorite characters. However, I stopped reading for a while before WCI because, even though the story is amazing, I was getting really bothered with this whole woman situation. At some point, a trait that was exclusively Sanji’s that I was willing to ignore seemed to take this whole world by storm

Because the story portrays Sanji as dumb for not fighting woman, but at the same time, quite noble. And it pissed me off so much it took me four years to read One Piece again. Mainly because I wanted to catch the Wano arc finished, but also because I was so done that I could only pray this sexism situation got better over time and it was only a weird phase of Oda.

AND OH BOY HOW IT WAS

Recently reading WCI, I remembered everything I loved about Sanji, why I enjoyed his smile and his brains so much, and why he was one of my favorite characters ever. It wasn’t just uneducated 12yo me that was overlooking issues, Sanji is genuiely a good guy. Believe me, I’m 20, a woman in STEM that deals with sexism every single day, I’m plenty educated now.

Speaking of which, this is already very long and I really should study for that calculus exam but now I’m getting heated up.

Because WCI touches and highlights the best parts of Sanji, and fuck you if you disagree (... /j)

It called for my attention how Oda kept talking and hitting themes surroundingĀ ā€œhumanityā€ in Whole Cake Island, and finally some things fell in place for me.Ā

This chivalry of Sanji is a character trait, that even if annoying sometimes, is still a character trait meant to be seen perhaps as a flaw, but also as a product of his humanity and kindness.

Because the world in One Piece doesn’t think the same way as Sanji. Luffy would kick a woman, he won’t give a single damn fuck, and we are supposed to like Luffy plenty! Even if Oda has his lows in how he deals with the perception of woman in One Piece, this double standard morality is exclusively a Sanji thing.

Not only is a Sanji thing, but also a Zeff thing.

That scene particularly stuck with me, where Zeff says that if Sanji would ever hit a woman, he would kick Sanji’s ass and then kill himself. When Sanji asked why on his good mind would he do that, Zeff respondsĀ ā€œIt’s the price a parent has to pay. Don’t become something I hate.ā€

And oh, OH, what a line. Because after hearing from his biological father he would be embarassed if the world ever discovered a failure was his son, it must have meant a lot for Sanji to hear Black Leg Zeff (the best person he has ever encountered besides maybe his mother) declaring so proudly he was Sanji’s parent.

It gives not only a reason for Sanji be one of the only characters with this mentality, but also justify why he is so strongly convict with this morality. He doesn’t want to be a failure again. Not to Zeff. And he doesn’t want to live in a world where he’s too ashamed to look his father in the eye.

And, in a vacuum, this scene must have felt like a cheap excuse of Oda to not change the character. But combining with the whole Whole Cake Island (ha, whole whole), this shows exactly what type of person Sanji is.

Because, as I said before, his chivalry is a product of his kindness and humanity (such a thing his brothers doesn’t have), but also is a mark Zeff left for him. Screaming without actually screaming that Vinsmoke Judge is not Sanji’s real father, because his actual dad made sure to raise well. To make him become a good person by his own ideals. Sanji has Zeff’s ideals because Zeff is his dad, and in result, everything about Sanji is a direct contrast of his biological siblings.

Also, uniting everything together, knowing damn well where his chivalry came from, it’s safe to assume that if Sanji ever loses that sense of morality, it would be a big bad thing. As in bad, bad thing.

Rather we like it or not, his morality is strong and tied directly with his humanity. If Sanji ever hits a woman, if he loses this sense of right and wrong, it means we lost Sanji as we knew him - a kind hearted boy, a strong chef, a strawhat that would die for his friends.

So in Wano, when thisĀ ā€œhappensā€, it feels like Oda warning us.

If Sanji ever hits a woman, you all better be shock in terror.

I don’t know if I misjudged Oda when I was 16, or if he was indeed telling a bad story before realizing and fixing it, but Wano feels like a redemption arc. Because above all that, we also have good LGBTQ representation that felt almost surreal, and one of the best One Piece arcs ever told in terms of story, but also, good Sanji moments, reminding us all of the person he is and who he became after WCI.

And for those who says this means Sanji won’t get character development ever, I present to you: Black Maria incident.

I see a lot of people disliking strongly how Sanji screamed for Robin’s help. But to me, it felt amazing to see Sanji actually trusting his friends. Because he won’t hit a woman, but he doesn’t need to die because of that. He has plenty of strong friends that can watch his back and do what he can’t do while he does what they can’t.Ā

Not only that, but him screaming for Robin specifically shows that he acknowledges the women on his crew are strong. Strong enough to fight for him, strong enough to handle themselves. And also shows how he trusts them. Trusts that they won’t die, trusts their power, trusts that he won’t need to save them because it’s his time to be saved.

Not to mention the whole sacrificing thing he has going on, but that one was plently adressed on WCI.

And you have all the right to dislike this character trait as long as you realize it’s, you know, a character trait. And one that holds a lot of simbolism. I eventually came to enjoy the weight this chivalry holds, but it’s up to you.

That’s it. Thanks for reading. I’ll definitely go study for that calculus exam now

at this point im convinced you guys arent watching his lore at all and are refusing to listen everything he says. look, im all for c!techno being a morally gray character but lets at least hold him accountable for the right reasons. hes not a badly written character, you are just lazy to learn about him

if you dont watch his lore then OF COURSE he will seem confusing to you.

"i lacked the courage to die for my ideals, and it wont happen again."

c!Techno’s character arc is not about changing his ideals, but slowly becoming better at them, and it’s not something you see much in storytelling, especially in characters with defined political ideologies. It’s awesome, unique, and honestly? Really freaking valuable.
