from a (half) south asian american who's dark skinned, i think one of the best examples of south asian representation in video games as of recent is frye from splatoon 3.

i think they did so many things great with her. even though she's not really desi considering human culture has been extinct for over 1000 years in the splatoon universe, they did a great portrayal of her as a south asian. the inclusion of her dark skin really adds to that, because as someone who's half south indian, with dark skin, colorism and racism against dark skinned ppl in south asia is a really big issue, and is rooted in the caste system. and even though i doubt the inclusion of her dark skin was meant to break that stigma and stereotyping, it really adds to her regardless!

some other great examples of south asian influence in frye that makes her great rep:

- her singing in splatoon 3 is based on indian vocal music, especially carnatic (south indian) music. there's also traditional indian instruments such as sitar/veena, dholak, and nadaswaram used in songs where she performs. her dancing performance is also reminiscent of indian dances like bharatanatyam, odissi, and kuchipudi.

- her fighting style in her boss battle is based off of snake charming, using a pungi flute to control her moray eels to fight the player, in a manner similar to snake charming

- her outfit is based off of western-south asian or indo-western fashion and clothing, wearing a dupatta over what looks like a choli, and her pants resemble patiala pants. her headpiece also resembles mango chutney or another south asian condiment

- the locker decoration received from story mode that depicts her, sunken scroll 11, is based off of traditional indian art, especially from south india. the pose she strikes and the surrounding motifs are reminiscent of south indian and sri lankan sculpture and art depicting hindu figures; an example of a work of art similar to this depiction of frye is the bronze statue Shiva Natarāja, depicting the god shiva as nataraja, the cosmic lord of dance.

- and although i don't know for sure if her big forehead is based in south asian traditional beauty traditions, i still think it adds to her greatly as south asian representation. video game characters from any underrepresented culture are often depicted under western beauty standards, and frye's appearance that defies both western beauty standards AND colorist standards of south asian beauty truly makes her a great example of south asian rep in video games.

AI Scraping Isn't Just Art And Fanfic

Something I haven't really seen mentioned and I think people may want to bear in mind is that while artists are the most heavily impacted by AI visual medium scraping, it's not like the machine knows or cares to differentiate between original art and a photograph of your child.

AI visual media scrapers take everything, and that includes screengrabs, photographs, and memes. Selfies, pictures of your pets and children, pictures of your home, screengrabs of images posted to other sites -- all of the comic book imagery I've posted that I screengrabbed from digital comics, images of tweets (including the icons of peoples' faces in those tweets) and instas and screengrabs from tiktoks. I've posted x-ray images of my teeth. All of that will go into the machine.

That's why, at least I think, Midjourney wants Tumblr -- after Instagram we are potentially the most image-heavy social media site, and like Instagram we tag our content, which is metadata that the scraper can use.

So even if you aren't an artist, unless you want to Glaze every image of any kind that you post, you probably want to opt out of being scraped. I'm gonna go ahead and say we've probably already been scraped anyway, so I don't think there's a ton of point in taking down your tumblr or locking down specific images, but I mean...especially if it's stuff like pictures of children or say, a fundraising photo that involves your medical data, it maybe can't hurt.

If you do want to officially opt out, which may help if there's a class-action lawsuit later, you're going to want to go to the gear in the upper-right corner on the Tumblr desktop site, select each of your blogs from the list on the right-hand side, and scroll down to "Visibility". Select "Prevent third party sharing for [username]" to flip that bad boy on.

i really really love vee's character development

when we see vee and camilla again in s3, we can see how much vee has adjusted to the human realm, and just like luz in the boiling isles, has found a place where she belongs in gravesfield. she's formed her own identity as a human member of the noceda family instead of being a doppelganger of luz, but is still comfortable in her basilisk form at home. she helps hunter, gus, willow, and amity adjust to the human realm. we can see that she's put the stuff back in luz's room that she had been planning to throw out while under luz's identity, and she's left a loving note to luz welcoming her back and saying she missed her. we can see framed photos of her and camilla, showing that camilla lovingly views vee as her adoptive daughter. she's made her own friends in gravesfield and developed a crush on her friend masha. and she was prepared to confront jacob hopkins, who kidnapped her and attempted to murder and dissect her, and even takes on belos, the man who ordered the revival of her species for experimentation, who essentially ordered a genocide of basilisks, while belos is possessing her friend and future adoptive brother hunter, while yelling to hunter to hang in there.

all this parallels luz's development, and shows that like luz found a place where she belongs in the boiling isles, vee found a place where she belongs in gravesfield. she's become less pessimistic and shy, and more optimistic, brave, and comfortable both as a basilisk and as a human without impersonating luz.

even though i wish we could have seen more of vee in s3 (curse disney for cutting toh short), she's still by far one of my favorite characters in toh and it's really wonderful how she developed as a character in the show. hoping we see more of her soon :)

anyway, i'm probably going to do some fanart of vee. loved her and her design since she was introduced, but especially once i first watched thanks to them :)
