on the pitt and its writing

I actually cannot get over how the pitt is so good at like. trusting its viewers to catch onto things while fully not giving any information at all. I don't know if I explained that correctly. but we literally are not told a single thing unless it's immediately relevant to the story or one of the characters.

we don't learn about mckay's ankle monitor until it goes off, and we never even learn why it's there because it's not immediately relevant to anything going on. we don't learn the details of why langdon needs the pills, only that the pills stem from something that happened to him. abbot's prosthetic is never mentioned until the very end because, shit, dude, he's probably in so much pain after that shift he needed to take it off to relax. nothing is explained because the characters know what they've gone through and they don't feel the need to talk about it, or it's not necessary for them to talk about it. and when we learn about stuff from the environment or the way the characters are acting, like with princess and perlah's friendship and javadi's insistence on being taken seriously and literally everything between collins and robby. it's all storytelling through implication and sometimes it's really obvious (like with javadi) and sometimes it's not (like with langdon) and sometimes it's just really good for setting up character reveals (like with santos).

this show is kind of a masterclass on the perfect balance of showing and telling, and it knows exactly when to use one, the other, or neither. and somehow it works every time???? jesus christ I need the writers team to win everything during the upcoming awards season.

santos and whitaker scenes i want to see in season two:

sharing a tupperware of lumpia for lunch.

whenever one of them finds out about gossip, the first thing they do is try to find the other one.

santos, while trying to get a reluctant whitaker to do something for her: c'mon huckleberry! den, denny- c'mon.

silent communication using the eyes, even better if it's blatantly in front of other people.

santos turning to whitaker, about to ask him to fetch her something, and the camera pans to whitaker with said thing already in his hand.

just one mention of a shared spotify playlist between them. please.

both of them sitting in santos' car and silently decompressing after the shift.

I love how The Pitt's use of the small time scale shows how quickly trauma (or just collaboration in any high pressure environment) can create bonds. Specifically I'm talking about Whittaker and Santos. I'm rewatching from the beginning after watching the finale, and in s1e1 when Whittaker complains about money problems, Santos just smirks and is like "sell a kidney." By the end of the season, she offers for him to move in with her.

This is like a season's worth of relationship development and character development for Santos especially. But like. Over the time span of one day. Less than 24 hours. That is just insane to think about. And yet. It makes sense. Because they endured insane trauma together and even before that, they were comrades in arms facing a constant onslaught of patients and expectations. It is just such good writing and something I've never seen before. I'm sure this has been said a million times but like. A full season of character development. One day. Both make sense. Wow.

Gif featuring Santos (a pale woman with blue eyes and short dark brown hair wearing a track suit) and Whitaker (a white man with brown hair and blue eyes in a t shirt) at the end of s1e15, in Whitaker's room after their shift. It features the lines from the episode. Santos' lines, in white, read "Just keep to yourself, don't annoy me, and you can move in." Whitaker's lines, in yellow, read "Wow. I don't know what to say."
