kai'la - edible

jahaal'got - healthy food, nutritious, good for you

yai'yai - richly nourishing. Dense, high-calorie food, of great importance to people dependent on highly portable field rations

kaihaast/kaihaaste(p) - dry ration

behot/behote(p) - citrusy Mandalorian herb used in beverages, mildly antiseptic and stimulating. "He stopped at each tapcaf along the Chortav Meshurkaane and had a mug of hot shig, then ambled along the market stalls that lined the alley." gi/gise(p) - fish

gihaal/gihaale(p) - dried fish-meal (like pemmican - lasts for years but very pungent smell). "She opened the metal container, letting the pungent aroma of dried smoked fish escape into the kitchen. Gihaal kept for years without refrigeration, one of the staples of Mandalorian ration packs" (501st)

shatual/shatuale(p) - commonly eaten Mandalorian livestock animal. "That’s the shatual, by the way, roasted and sliced." (True Colors) "I say we get started on butchering that shatual if Rav hasn't already prepared it, Mer'ika. Perfect celebratory meal, if we had the whole clan here." (501st)

loras/lorase(p) - meat/flesh

warra/warra'se(p) - warra nuts. "Ooh, you got us some warra nuts! Hot ’n’ spicy, and salt ’n’ sour! Kandosii!" (501st)

papurgaat/papurgaate(p) - fruit

uj'alayi/uj'alayise(p) - dense, very sweet flat cake made of ground nuts, syrup, pureed dried fruit, and spice. "Sometimes Ordo felt just as he did when he was a small child and Skirata first towered above him: part of him was competent far beyond his years, and the rest was hollow terror because the kaminiise were going to kill him, but Skirata had snatched him and his brothers to safety and fed them all on uj’alayi, a sticky-sweet Mandalorian cake." haarshun/haarshune(p) - thin bread/parchment bread - a thin sheet of bread dried to preserve it, and reconstituted in liquid. Mando ration-pack staple. Made properly, it's so thin you can read through it, hence the name; 'see-bread'.

skraan/skraane(p) - generic slang for a meal or food. “You won’t be fit for much without some decent skraan inside you.” (Order 66)

ori'skraan/ori'skraane(p) - a delicacy, a real treat in terms of food; a blow-out meal, a feast (slang), "big eats"

skraan’ikase/skraan'ikasese(p) - assorted small snacks like meze or tapas - "small eats" - a celebratory meal for Mandos because it can take hours to eat, and the dishes are often fiddly, a contrast to the easy-to-eat, quick meals necessary in the field. "Inside the house, the veshok table was laid with an impressive spread of skraan’ikase, an assortment of small fancy snacks that could be lingered over for hours." (501st)

epar'yaim/epar'yaime(p) - restaurant, canteen

sha’kajir - to have a mealtime conversation/to discuss over the dinner table/sitting down for a meal, like the French "à table" - the word for table comes from the word for level, flat, so the implication is one of equals breaking bread together

shig/shige(p) - tea- any infusion of whatever's available, but usually a mildly stimulant herb with a citrus flavor called behot. "He stopped at each tapcaf along the Chortav Meshurkaane and had a mug of hot shig, then ambled along the market stalls that lined the alley." tihaar/tihaare(p) - alcoholic drink - strong clear spirit made from fruit, like eau de vie. "Every tihaar was different, made from whatever local fruit was available" (501st)

ne'tra gal/ne'tra gale(p) - black ale/ sweet, almost spicy black beer similar to milk stout. "Ordo, sweat-streaked and visibly pleased with himself, halted the game to hand out mugs of ne’tra gal." (501st)

buy'ce gal/buy'ce gale(p) - pint of ale. "The chieftains and neighbors who drank here had become Fett’s cabinet, and if there was any serious attempt at government going on—Mando’ade regarded that as a deeply unhealthy and aruetyc thing—then it would only be tolerated over a buy’ce gal in the tapcaf."

draluram - vivid - used only of food, to indicate strong, distinct flavor, lit. "bright mouth" - one of the four essentials of Mandalorian cooking

heturam - mouth-burn spicy-"mouthburn" - a sought-after state of intense burning in the mouth brought about by very spicy food

hetikles - nasal-burn spicy-burning sensation in the sinuses brought about by specific spices - Mandalorians prize this. "It was a blisteringly spicy meat-and-vegetable casserole, which had the prized characteristic of hetikles, pungent enough to burn the nasal passages, one of the four qualities in Mando cooking." Shadowhunters meet Demigods Part 2

This is part 2 to my fanfic/headcannon series on what I think would happen if the Nephilim and Demigods meet. While the last installment was a bunch of headcannons, this one is gonna be a full on fanfic, so here we go... Clary screamed and squeezed her mother’s hand as another contraction hit her. Clary was currently in labor for her and Jace’s first child, and everyone couldn’t be happier. Well, everyone assumed that it was Jace’s child, since Jace and Clary have been such a loyal couple one would assume that this was his child she was giving life to, right? At this point, not even Clary herself is sure. Something about this child felt different, granted this was her first baby, but still, something wasn’t sitting right with her. Clary hissed as the biggest contraction yet came. ‘You’re doing great’ spoke the voice of the Silent Brother who had come to deliver her baby ‘just one more push’ “Hear that, Clary dear,” said her mother, Jocelyn “ you and Jace will be parents soon enough.” Clary sighed. She was so grateful for her mother’s presence during this ordeal, especially since Jace had fainted five minutes in, yes apparently the great Jace Herondale, Nephilim golden boy who can slay demons with one swing of a sword, fainted after five minutes of his girlfriend being in labor. She was definitely going to tease him with that later down the line. With one final push, Clary heard the sweet, first cry of her baby. ‘It’s a girl’ the Silent Brother spoke in the mind. Her mother made a joyous squeal as the Silent Brother wrapped the newborn up and placed her in Clary’s arms. Clary felt tears of joy threatening to burst out of her. She had never felt this type of protectiveness over someone. Now she understood why the own mother hid her away from the Shadowhunters all those years ago. “I’ll tell everyone that the baby’s here,” her mother said, happy as can be. After her mother left the room, the Silent Brother spoke again ‘There is something different about this child. It is truly something I have never seen before.’ “Could it be dangerous?” Clary asked quietly, suddenly worried. ‘Not all different things are bad. You are very different, Clarissa Fairchild, and yet you are a hero, do not fret to much, but keep an eye on your daughter as she grows.’ Before Clary could say anything else, Jace burst into to the room, followed quickly by Simon, her parabatai and oldest friend, Simon’s fiancé and Clary’s good friend, Isabelle, Izzy’s Brother and Jace’s parabatai, Alec, and finally Alec’s fiancé and two kids, Magnus, who practically watched Clary grow up, and Rafe and Max, who were all excited to meet their new cousin. Jace was immediately by Clary’s side, eyes shifting between her and the child, like he couldn’t decide who to look at more. “Clary, by the angel, Clary, my love,” eyes swelling up with tears, Jace begins kissing Clary’s forehead, “she’s beautiful Clary, just like you, I can already tell, she’s going to be just like you” “I actually agree with Jace on this one,” Simon said, leaning towards Clary and her baby, “she already looks like a tiny copy of you.” Clary laughed, but had to agree with him, her baby already had tufts of red hair on her little head and a spray of freckles on her face, she still hadn’t opened her eyes yet, but Clary wouldn’t be surprised if she found them green. “Congratulations, Biscuit,” Magnus said warmly, looking down at the tiny bundle in her arms, “you did well.” “Thank you, Magnus.” “Have you guys decided on a name yet?” Izzy said with excited energy. Clary and Jace had in fact discussed names, and they had settled on a pretty good one for their baby girl. “Charlotte” the couple had decided on the name with a little help from their warlock friends, Magnus and Tessa, “Charlotte Jocelyn Frairchild.” “Fairchild?” Alec exclaimed puzzled “Not Herondale?” Jace chuckled to himself, “ Since little Charlotte was born out of wedlock, me and Clary agreed that she would take Clary’s maiden name, as a compromise.” The others nodded, accepting the name, and Charlotte, into their lives and hearts. Neither the Silent Brother nor Clary was wrong, little Charlotte Fairchild was different than most Shadowhunter children her age, something was off with her. No she did not have demon eyes. No she did not seem to be switch with a sickly child. But something was different about her. She loves being around water but is for some reason never wet, she could be taking a bath and be bone dry. And one morning Clary and Jace found a dead snake in her crib with her once. Clary had freaked out, but Jace was sure that little Charlotte was fine. But the thing that puzzled Clary the most about Charlotte was her eyes. They were green, just as Clary had predicted, but not the same shade as her own or Jocelyn’s. They were green, but slightly off from Clary’s own. Jace didn’t mind, or maybe he just didn’t see it. But Clary saw it, and she was starting to mind, mind that Charlotte might not be Jace’s daughter, mind that baby Charlotte was something other than Nephilim. Clary looked over at her daughter, wide awake in the basket, staring up at her with her big green eyes. Green eyes, the color of the sea. That’s it for part 2, I’ll continue this in part 3.

Since the holiday toy drive post is circulating again, I figured this would also be helpful! Food insecurity is such a massive problem in America, in general, and if you have the means to help feed others, I think you should take that opportunity. Here are some other tips:

1. If you’re planning on donating items from your own pantry, please check the expiration dates on the packaging. Think of your donations as gifts to bestow, not castoffs to be rid of. It’s awful to think of people feeling like they got scraps someone else just didn’t want. Everyone deserves dignity with their meals.

2. If you’d rather give money to a food bank, that’s also great since they buy food in bulk and know what items are most wanted/needed!

3. Not everyone has access to appliances like stoves or microwaves or hot plates so if you can donate items that don’t need to be heated up, that would also be greatly appreciated!
