In the episode “The Cave of Two Lovers”, Zuko and Iroh find themselves relying on the kindness and hospitality of an herbalist named Song. Song and her village are both heavily inspired by Korean culture. I notice that in supplementary materials, such as the artbook or the Nick website, Song’s storyline doesn’t really get mentioned. It makes me wonder if Bryke left the work of designing the characters and backgrounds of that particular B-plot up to the staff in Korea.
The look of Song’s village is heavily inspired by traditional Korean architecture known as hanok (한옥). According to the Encyclopedia Britannica:
[Korean] Architecture is characterized by naturalistic tendencies, simplicity, economy of shape, and the avoidance of extremes. What was a sharply curving Chinese roof was modified in Korea into a gently sloping roof. Sharp angles, strong lines, steep planes, and garish colours are all avoided.
In particular, I believe Song’s village to have been based directly on South Korea’s Eunpyeong Hanok Village (은평구한옥마을); Both settings are predominantly composed of buildings with black tile roofs, white walls, and brown support beams. The little house in the corner with the thatched roof is likely inspired by the buildings of Andong Hahoe Folk Village (안동하회마을).
The windows of Song’s clinic feature Korean-style decorative frames with white paper coverings. Traditional Korean window frames typically consist of intersecting wooden squares and rectangles that form sleek and geometric patterns. Korean mulberry paper or hanji (한지) was famous across Asia for its white color, insulative properties, and extreme durability.
I’ll save my analysis of Song and her mother’s character designs for my next “Cultural Fashion” post. Look forward to it!

okay so,,, sonia is an incarnation of hylia, right?
spoilers and theory below cut
we know that the hylians of rauru’s time are descendants of skyloft, or at least it is heavily implied.
it’s said that the zonai come from the sky, but what if skyloft wasn’t the only sky civilization?
i think the zonai civilization peaked, and eventually fell, centuries after the events of skyward sword. the lanayru sand facilities are abandoned, suggesting that zonai once roamed the earth but lifted up into the heavens along with skyloft.
I believe the zonai people stayed in the sky after the sealing of demise, and that rauru and mineru only came to earth after the death of their people.
in the zonai survey team scroll quest line, which describes events in the past, sonia is not a princess but a priestess.
we know that rauru came to earth and established the kingdom, and he married sonia because she intrigued him, but what if it was also because she was the goddess incarnate?
we know that the incarnate cycles work very differently from each other: zelda is born every generation, usually within the ruling family, and will always live. link is born randomly and only when he is needed. ganon is evil, and so his existence is an everlasting festering curse, but a gerudo male is born every hundred years and every one has a small chance of being ganondorf.
that being said we know rauru’s time didn’t have a wielder of the sword, but definitely had an incarnate of the goddess.
it would explain sonia’s powers, and why she recognized zelda. it would explain why rauru risked his safety to marry sonia. and it would explain why ganondorf ultimately targeted and killed her, harnessing not only her secret stone but her godly light.
Not to post serious art on here but maybe some ATLA fans would appreciate the illustrations I made for my portfolio based on the Rise of Kyoshi novel.
