Finally completed Karlach's piece a few months late, but definitely proud of this one! š„ Just left with Laezel's and Wyll's piece after this!
Lots of people have been pinging me in posts about this company and their various apps (pictured above). I donāt own any Apple products, so I havenāt been able to see these apps myself, but my understanding is that they pull data from AO3 and present it in the app, sometimes for a fee.Ā
If youāre wondering whether your own stories are being hosted on these apps, youāll need to either check for yourself or find a friend who can check for you.
I emailed AO3 Support about the subject, and hereās what I got in response:
Thanks for asking about this app. We checked with the OTW Legal team and our coders, and have some information to pass on. āThe OTW does not own the works posted on the Archive ā they are all owned by their respective authors.Ā
For that reason, although the OTW can (and does) rely on trademark law to make sure that people donāt make confusing apps that would make people think the OTW or AO3 is associated with them, thereās nothing we can do about apps or services that contain works owned by AO3 users. Ā That is up to the authors themselves, who own the copyrights in their fanworks.Ā
āMany sites have procedures (known as DMCA takedown procedures) that allow copyright owners such as fan-authors to request that their works be removed. The Fanfic Pocket Archive Library may have such procedures. Ā Regardless of whether those procedures exist, copyright owners can always demand that their works be removed from places they are not authorized, and as a matter of copyright law, sites should comply with such demands.
āThe Apple App store also has procedures for reporting apps that infringe copyright: Ā https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/appstorenotices/#?lang=enĀ
āThe Google Play store has similar: https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905Ā
āTo be clear, to the best of our knowledge, the app is not wholesale scraping and storing data - theyāre displaying content from the Archive in a very heavily modified format. Because the appās subscription fee can be explained as āto support the appās code baseā and not for the content itself, it is within legal bounds. Our only suggestions are for the creators of the works to issue DCMA takedowns to the app developer, and to the appropriate app store if they find the developer response unsatisfactory.
tldr; Thereās nothing that AO3 can do in this situation. Itās up to individual authors to report the copyright infringement to protect their own work. Start with the app itself and then go to the app store if they donāt do as you requested.Ā
If you could signal boost this post, Iām sure AO3 Support would appreciate it. I can only imagine how many emails theyāre getting about this right now.Ā
The form will be available from 13 Dec - 17 Dec 2024 6pm GMT+8, come get your sc merch! š

people need supplies to protest safely, and even if they bring supplies with them, they can often run out. if youāre able, stock up and hand them out to people protesting. for more supplies to donate, see the āgeorge floyd actionā google docs link in section 5.
water bottles (dehydration and heatstroke are not things people should have to deal with alongside bastard cops. if the police in your area are particularly violent or known to use tear gas, get the ones with the sports cap/suction-thing/etc so people can use them as emergency eye-flushes.)
snacks (make sure to take into account that people have allergies of all sorts. foods will have a little label that says āmay containā and then list any potential allergens. write the allergens on the ziploc (or any container you use) in permanent marker, or better yet, write the snacks included in the pack.)
masks (donāt forget thereās still a pandemic going on. also it will aid in deterring facial recognition when the police try to track down protestors, Ā also part two, if the cops use tear gas, wearing a mask (with the combination of a scarf or bandana) will lessen the adverse effects. lessen, not stop.)
bandanas, scarves, etc. and goggles (ski goggles, swimming goggles, etc.) (see above for explanation on the scarves. same goes for the goggles. antiātear gas and antiāfacial recognition.)
clean shirts (for people who are heavily gassed. also helps deter recognition through clothing.)
wound care supplies (band-aids, packets of neosporin packets or a similar antibiotic, alcohol wipes, etc.; if you can, decant bactine into those little travel bottles.)
a sharpie or another type of marker (for writing bail numbers or emergency contacts on arms, hands, etc. itās not enough to have your cityās bail fund number stored on your phone; the police wonāt give it to you to look it up. give people a marker so they can write it down, preferably not washable so it isnāt easily removed.)
IMPORTANT: KNOWING FIRST AID
tear gas: if youāre hit, get out as fast and as soon as you can. take anyone you can with you. the longer youāre in the gas, the harder it will be for you to see, and it can irritate your airways, making it hard to breathe. if youāre hit, donāt run; itāll only make things worse on your lungs. when you leave the area, take a cold shower. donāt use hot water (it will only reactivate the agent); donāt bathe (it will only spread the CS around). (source 1) (source 2) (cdc fact sheet on tear gas)
move them to a clean and ventilated area where itās as safe as possible.
ask them if theyāre wearing contact lenses. have them remove it. if theyāre wearing glasses, rinse it with water.
solution of half liquid antacid, half water. spray from the inside going out, with the head tilted back and slightly towards the side being rinsed. if they say itās okay, open the eye slightly while doing this. (source)
bullet wounds: the most important thing is to stop the bleeding. be sure to check for an exit wound and cover that as well. treat both wounds, but treat the worse one first.

making a tourniquet (a commercial tourniquet is best, but improvised ones can work as well if done properly; the most important things to remember is that tourniquets are for limb injuries and are not meant for the head or torso and that they have to be very tightly wound on the injury.)
