to those of you who are moving here from tiktok, from someone whos used both tiktok and tumbr for years...

1. DO NOT censor your posts

dont censor sex, abuse, suicide, dont censor it. we dont have censors like tiktok does, you wont be banned for talking about these things and tagging them properly helps people avoid them (also, we dont have shadowbanning here)

2. we dont really have an algorithm

you follow who you follow, and you see posts from who you follow or what you search. the 'for you page' is basically useless here. this also brings me to my next two points

3. dont crosstag

we get it, on tiktok you have to crosstag for reach, but thats not really a thing here. just tag your posts properly (also posters often leave more info about the post in the tags!! and when you reblog stuff you can leave your own notes in the tags, kind of like the old "repost comments" on tiktok)

4. dont expect to go viral/be famous

"viral" isnt really a thing on here (at least not for the average blogger). your posts will probably get 2-10 likes and you wont get nearly as many followers than on tiktok. thats just how tumblr is

5. blocking is your best friend

tiktok is VERY discussion based, and while tumblr is much more discussion based than other social medias, its still not a good place for ragebait/discourse. dont interact, itll make your experience worse in the end, just block and move on

6. you cant go into someone elses house and start rearranging their furniture

this is tumblr, not tiktok. dont diss old tumblr users for how they use the site or try to change them, thats like going into someone elses house and trying to rearrange their furniture. we've been here longer and we're familiar with the site and its culture, either find your niche, adapt, or find a different app

UC or ER?

As a Chinese American, it's so jarring to see positive things said towards China/Chinese culture now that RedNote has become trending.

I see all the TikTok's about people moving to RedNote, all the nice things said about Chinese culture and people and I just feel conflicted. Like great, it's becoming less stigmatized for people to enjoy Chinese culture but I had to go through hell to get to see it.

From 2020-2022, I saw my culture being mocked, memed, and ridiculed. I was being called slurs in the lunch hall in high school. I was glared at in stores by middle aged men. MY OWN FRIENDS refused to stick up for me against blatant Sinophobia and even contributed to it.

I still constantly have to BEG some of my friends, some who I've known for OVER A DECADE, to at least acknowledge that things are different from me than they are for them.

I did an entire paper on Sinophobia for one of my classes. I used only academic journals and sources from accredited schools, I pulled from my own experiences, I put my blood, sweat and tears into that paper. It got me an A in that class too. And that still wasn't enough for some people to ACKNOWLEDGE we had a different experience.

And surprisingly, I never experienced any of the previously listed bullshit in my circle on tumblr so thank you.

Edit: I would like to add that I don't condone hate/generalization to other groups. We can point out discrimination without being discriminatory ourselves. BEHAVE🫵

This is very pretty, but it reminds me of the Dream Tiger that briefly took over Tumblr some time ago. We should bring it back.

Maui is not obese

Maui is a powerful demigod. Big and strong and… oh, you think he looks fat?

That’s probably because you’ve been conditioned by the media to accept this

as what strong and fit looks like. Amiright?

Sadly… these guys are not all that strong. Yeah, they got muscles… but they aren’t built in a useful way. They are built for looks and that’s about it.

This… 

is a strong guy. Actually a competitor in the Strongman competition. But… his tummy sticks out and he doesn’t look like a Dorito. 

You know who else is strong?

And Maui…

Look at those arms, omg. And that solid, sturdy torso. You can see a shadow where his meat covers his ribs, but he doesn’t look like any slouch to me.

And this guy…

That’s Dwayne Johnson’s grandfather. When the Disney animators showed him their sketches of Maui, he pulled out a picture of his grandfather and showed it to them because he was amazed how similar they looked. This dude was also a pro wrestler.

There’s actually a great infographic about ab muscles and stuff over HERE. but this is the part i want to show you.

Now… look at Maui again.

That thickness don’t move like fat. It doesn’t jiggle and he’s able to flex it. Look at how it sits on his body. It doesn’t sag… he doesn’t have a gut. There’s even a slight V shape to his torso.

It’s just big and not ‘defined’.

And people aren’t used to that.

Okay, people. I just miserably failed my driving test because my dumbass low-key had an anxiety attack the moment I sat down next to the examiner in the car and forgot to lower the emergency brake.
