Ghost Hunting (Gerard Way and Frank Iero Imagine) (sorta)

"Guys I really don’t think this is a good idea!” My voice was heavy with concern as I walked down the high school hallway with my group of friends.

“Why? Is little y/n afraid?” My friend Franks’ childish tone was, of course, the first response. He was short but he was feisty. Always ready with a sassy comeback or an angry rebuttal. He had a temper, or maybe a napoleon complex. But he was best friends with my boyfriend, Gerard so I had to put up with him.

“Let her be Frank. Remember what happened when we took her to that haunted corn maze? It took thirty minutes to get her to stop crying.” I feel Gerards arm sling around my waist and pull me closer to him as he lightly joked at my expense.  I give him an eye roll and push him away playfully. Laughing, he pulls me back and kisses me on the cheek.

“Well I’m sorry Gee for freaking out when someone with a chainsaw comes chasing after me! Did you expect me to laugh?” I laced my words with heavy sarcasm, my defense mechanism. Frank waved his hands bringing the attention back to him.

“Okay but seriously! Isn’t anyone the least bit curious about the Aria Way haunting? Don’t you want to know if she’s still creeping around the place?” Franks dark brown eyes grew bigger with each question. His usual excitement was now heightened with his hopeful investigation plan. Frank had been going on and on about sneaking onto the grounds of an abandoned insane asylum. More specifically, the insane asylum in our town that is rumored to be haunted. We learned about the hillcrest sanatorium in school. It was first a tuberculosis ward in the early 1900’s but then got turned into an asylum years later. So of course people in our town and the towns over wanted to see if it was haunted. People had reported feeling sick as soon as they went on the grounds, or getting weird scratches and stuff like that but I think it’s all just people running away with their imaginations.  Our local newspaper had published an article in the most recent release about an old patient, Aria Way, who was admitted to the asylum in 1947 when she was just 16 years old. Her parents had found out about her female lover and had her admitted immediately. Back then if you were homosexual you were shunned and usually put in an asylum to be “cured’.

“I’m in!” Gerards’s brother Mikey piped in, looking up from his phone through his dark blonde hair.

“Me too! This will be the perfect inspiration for my senior art project. I’ll bring my canvas and stuff.” My artsy purple haired best friend Isabelle added. Great now I was obligated to go. I couldn’t be the only one not going.

“Great then it’s settled! I’ll meet you guys at my house by 5 and then we will just take my car to the site.“ My stomach started to turn into itself. For someone who was skeptical I was sure nervous. Don’t be a baby. I repeated to myself as we went our separate ways to 6th hour.

“Listen y/n. If you don’t want to do this it’s okay. You and I can just go back to your house and watch movies. I’ll tell Frank I’m not feeling well or something.” Gerard brushed his long dark hair out of his face and turned down his stereo to look at me with his beautiful hazel eyes as we drove in his car to Frank’s house. He was noticing my unusual silence.

“It’s fine Gee. It’s just a building. Ghosts aren’t real. I’m fine really. Now turn it back up I was listening to that!” I turned up the Misfits song he had playing. I focused on the drums in the song and smiled at him while I nervously played with the ends of my newly dyed silver hair. The smile took almost all my energy and I didn’t know if I was trying to convince him that I was okay or myself that I was going to be okay.

We soon enough arrived at Franks house. The whole gang was waiting by his car.

“Finally! I thought you guys chickened out!” Frank called out lighting up a cigarette from his leather jacket, as we got out of Gerard’s car.

“You know us better than that Franklin.” I gave him a smug look as we all piled in his old Ford Taurus. The loud start of his engine fired off signals all throughout my body making me jump. This was it. I couldn’t back out now.

Minutes passed like hours. With every mile I felt my stomach twist and my palms sweat. I tried to keep time with my heart but it was sounding more like a hummingbird than a second hand. My conscience was in a tizzy. Every inch of my body told me that this wasn’t a good idea.

“We’re here!”  I looked around and realized I wasn’t paying attention to how we had gotten here. The panicked feeling in my torso got worse. It felt as though bricks were slowly piling inside of my lungs. Frank parked the car and turned to us in the back seat with a creepy smile laid across his face. “Let’s go find Aria!”

We got out of his car and walked toward the grounds of the lot. It wasn’t at all what I expected. All that was standing were a few broken down concrete walls. Everything else was semi torn down or burned. There was trash and graffiti everywhere. It was more sad than anything. Gerard took my hand and pulled me closer to him. He kissed the side of my head and whispered in my ear, “Don’t worry love, I’ll protect you.” 

“So according to the people who were interviewed for the article the ghost of Aria Way is a tall  female figure with long blonde hair and wearing a white hospital gown splattered with blood.” Mikey spoke animatedly holding back a laugh, reading from his phone. “It’s rumored that after being shocked so many times for treatment she went nuts and tried to kill the doctors with a scalpel. Before doctors could restrain her she climbed out a 2 story window, proclaimed her love to Satan and jumped. She died on impact from what would have been about there.” He read from the online news article and pointed to an open space above a standing wall. His finger moved down to where I was standing, indicating that it was where she had died. I instinctively moved three steps back.  “It also says that the only two things she had brought with her to the hospital was a picture of her mother and father and a doll. The picture was found but the doll wasn’t.” Mikey continued to read.

“Well then let’s find it God damn it! Split up everybody!” Frank said excitedly as he put out his second cigarette of the night. We all hesitantly split up.Even Gerard and I. I didn’t remember letting g of his hand. I walked towards the far right of the wreckage that was once a part of the building. It was surrounded by a lot of red and orange colored leaves. I had to remember to tell Isabelle about this spot so she could paint it. As creepy as this place was, the autumn trees surrounding it made it look a little less eerie.  I strolled leisurely enjoying the scenery until I felt something under my foot. I looked down expecting to see a soda can or an empty carton of cigarettes left by disrespectful teens but instead I saw something I never would have guessed. It was a doll. A white doll with blue stitched eyes and a red stitched mouth. I recognized it immediately from the article Mikey was reading from. I went to pick it up but stopped as soon as my fingers grazed across the face. It felt like cold skin, not burlap or cotton.

“Ahhhhhhhhhhh!” I heard a blood-curdling scream and looked back up. Not even 10 feet from me loomed a girl with blonde hair and a bloody hospital gown. And she was staring right at me with her gaping black holes of eyes. I could only think to run but my legs refused to budge. I felt like I was frozen in time. She smiles at me and that’s when it happens. My skin and insides now felt as though someone had dumped kerosene on them and lit a match but I stilI couldn’t scream or run. I was trapped under a spell. Her spell. She moved closer and closer and with every step the pain radiated even more. I was losing control of my body. My eyesight was blackening and then my limbs gave out. The cold ground burned my skin as it made contact. The last thing I remember was being on the ground seizing with her demonic face close to mine whispering another language. The pain was overtaken for a brief moment with fear. Complete and utter fear. I was sure I had seen the Devil himself. She touched my face with her lifeless cold hand and I was gone.

“Y/N!!!!! Oh my gosh! Guys she’s over here!” Someone’s voice was above me, but I still couldn’t see. I couldn’t tell if I was too scared to or if I was too close to death to.  “Someone call an ambulance! She’s having a seizure. And- oh my gosh is that blood? Did she hit her face?” The voice continued in a frantic monologue. My body still felt like it was on fire and it didn’t help that the voice was putting their hands on me. Touching all the places that hurt the most.   Please kill me. I try to whisper.

“Y/n!  Baby can you hear me?” Another voice comes through and I feel myself being lifted off of the ground. This was it. I was going to heaven. But why was I still in so much pain? Is this a sick joke, God?

“Oh my god. Oh my god! What should we do?” A different voice comes through a little clearer. The pain suddenly went away and I felt as though I had never left earth. My eyes finally get enough energy to creep open and I see that I am in the backseat of Frank’s car with Gerard, Frank, Isabelle and Mikey. They were all huddled around me with wide eyes of terror

“Oh man. Are you okay y/n?”

“What happened?’

“Should we go to the hospital?” Everyone was throwing questions at me left and right. But my brain couldn’t process any of them. It felt like it was going to explode. I sit up and rub my temples hoping it will clear my vision or take me back 3 hours. Gerard hands me a water bottle and a few aspirins from my purse. I take them graciously. Swallowing the pills as if they would solve all the problems in the world. I closed my eyes and leaned into Gerard’s flannel covered chest. Listening to his heartbeat and inhaling his cologne and coffee scent, I gave up. Whether it was shock or permanent damage, my mind and mouth refused to work. I couldn’t explain to myself what had just happened let alone a group of people who hadn’t seen what I had. Or maybe I hadn’t seen anything. Maybe I was as childish as everybody else claiming to have had a demonic experience here. Or maybe I was just losing my mind. Debating the possibilities in my head just made me more sick.

But I did know with every ounce of my being that I wanted- No. I needed to get away from this place.

After a moment of deep breathing and a few more sips of water I was finally able to spit out a whisper. “Home”. Isabelle and Gerard helped me get buckled up as Frank started the engine. “I’m so sorry sweetheart” Gerard whispered as he pulled me into him. He continued to hold me and tell me I was okay now.I felt a small pang of relief as we started to drive out of the lot. I turned my head to get one last look at the Hillcrest sanatorium. To burn an image in my head of the place nightmares are formed. I took in the now seemingly dark trees, the cloudy sky, and the sad pewter concrete blocks. That’s when I noticed something different about the main wall. There was someone sitting on top of it. It was the thing. Her. She was sitting on the wall with the doll in her tiny hands. She looked in my direction and put a lanky finger to her dead lips before jumping off and disappearing into the ground.
