Shorthand Google Reference Guide

I’m gonna type this up while it’s fresh on my mind because some of y’all don’t know how to use Google

SO YOU WANT TO DRAW A woman sitting in the grass.

IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting

Very vogue. Very male gaze. Good for fashion or model pictures, not very good if you’re wanting to draw a natural looking pose on a woman who isn’t a model and whose camera certainly didn’t fucking turn on by itself.

IF YOU SEARCH: female sitting pose

Arguably worse, depending on the use. My experience with “female + pose” searches is that you get a lot of IMVU and The Sims pose sets, and artists making sketch compiliations that… don’t always have great anatomy and are frequently just more stiff model poses. I do use similar searches for pinup sketches, ie, “female sassy pinup pose,” though “posing for pinup photography” and “how to pose for” will give different results if you aren’t finding what you need.

Closer. Still kind of staged looking. Maybe we don’t want her studying. Maybe we just want her relaxing. Still, you start to see how specific keyword searches will really get you results.

Nice. This is only a small handful of the results, but most of them more or less fit my mental image. Mostly stock images, but good for gesture sketches or figuring out a pose. Still… we could go further, and I think I will.

Jackpot. Senior pictures aren’t always awkward kids in braces. Look at how much more natural a few of these look? Compare that to the “Female sitting” search. Google Search tip #1 is basically “use more and specific keywords.” But just… one more thing I just… can’t get off my mind… what if I… just…

Uh oh. So let me level with you, if you just google “dreadlocks,” expect a lot of white people. I spent over 30 minutes adding keywords to this search, and every page was still white people. Breaking it back down to “black woman sitting on grass” helped but gave me all the boring pose issues of the female sitting search. So basically, Google Search tip #2 is: Google image search is as White as the rest of the damn world. How do we find what we’re looking for now, then?

IF YOU SEARCH: black woman sitting in grass nature tumblr blackout

Beautiful, natural poses. Adding “photography” whitewashed it. Adding “summer” gave me bikini pinups. Searching for POC models using Google image search is infinitely more frustrating than finding a million thin white women, and you’re usually going to be better off supporting POC modeling blogs themselves than fighting with Google all day. Using “tumblr” and “instagram” as keywords may also get you a lot more natural, less Vogue Was Here hits. Pinterest too, on occasion. 

But keep in mind that these are real people–especially using tags like “tumblr” or “blackout.” There’s a difference between referencing a pose or drawing different face shapes, and outright copying someone’s exact likeness without their permission. Maybe also consider liking/reblogging/following them if they’re a model or photographer. Use some common sense. You don’t own images found on google yadda yadda don’t be a dick.

So in Rise there’s a small running gag where whenever one of his family members try to assume what Leo’s doing it cuts to him doing basically the opposite of what they’ve just said.

Raph: Hey! Where’s Leo?

Mikey: I’m sure wherever he is, he’s trying to save us

Raph: Leo probably talked his way straight into Big Mamma’s dungeon 

But the interesting thing about this gag is the reverse isn’t true, when Leo guesses his families actions he’s almost always correct in predicting their actions

Leo: Look I bet the only reason we’re here right now is ‘cause Donnie inputted coordinates 

Donnie: After inputting Shredder’s previous coordinates on the X-Y-Z and D for Donnie axis, I have calculated that this is the sight of our final resting spot

Leo: April finally used her crane license

April: ‘Why would you get a crane license April?’ BECAUSE THIS!

Leo: And Raph is going to put it all together in a plan to defeat that led head with this mystic collar 

Raph: Wow Leo that’s remarkably accurate 

Leo being able to predict his families actions to a near perfect accuracy shows his skill as a strategist & potential as a leader but the fact that the reverse isn’t true, that Leo’s family CAN’T seem to predict Leo’s actions to a almost humorous degree shows that while Leo has an understanding of his family, his family fails to truly understand him.

I just can’t stop thinking about the fact that Leo knows his family far better than they know him.

Punished: A Ruby vs. Tyrion Analysis

So I loved the latest RWBY episode, but I’m surprised that people are ragging on Ruby to the extent they are for joining the fight, like: 

She’s a kid. They’re all kids, but Ruby is two years younger. People are pretty impulsive at that age. 

That being said, this is very much her characterization. Jaune, for all his improvement, couldn’t hope to stand up to Tyrion, so given the chance he’ll step back and let an experienced Hunter take the lead. Ren is very cautious and logical - same there. And Nora, despite her eagerness, tends to both stick by Ren and won’t pick a fight if others don’t want her to (think back to her offer to break Cardin’s legs. Despite how ‘impulsive’ and ‘violent’ she is, she leaves him be once she knows Jaune doesn’t want that). Ruby though? She’s ALL ABOUT fighting the good fight no matter what. It’s one of the first lines in the whole series - she’s a “simple soul,” she wants to become a Huntress because she was taught to “help people,” and that drive is reinforced strongly on their mission with Oobleck. Ruby is the only one who isn’t questioned about her choice to be a Huntress because she’s the only one who fights without true, ulterior motives. It’s not in her to stay on the sidelines. 

However, she’s VERY strategic here. Qrow tells her not to get closer… so she doesn’t, at least not at first. She gains high ground to use her gun and the only reason she gets closer is because her aim can’t keep up with their speed. Ruby is a Huntress - by necessity now if nothing else - and she obeyed her more experienced teammate’s orders, though when those orders proved to not be enough, she made the decision to take further action. 

“This is my fight too!” It IS. Thank you, Ruby. She was just informed that she has some sort of rare, unfathomable power… without anyone really explaining to her what that means. She knows now that she has an important role to play in this war. She knows some queen named Salem is after her in-particular. Hell, she went to a school (again, two years early) specifically designed to teach her to fight. Ruby reminds me of Harry Potter in that she’s getting mixed signals right and left. Fight, they say, but also stay safe. Do your part, but wait until some perfect, magical moment… but no, we won’t tell you when that is. It doesn’t help that, also like Harry, the adults in her life are torn between loving her as a child (Qrow) and needing her to be a weapon (Ozpin). They can’t expect Ruby to play both roles. 

Most importantly, she just watched two close friends die. For Penny and Pyrrha both Ruby couldn’t get there in time. She was so close to them and she still couldn’t get there. Now her uncle, like them, is literally right in front of her, potentially losing this fight (he did lose his weapon, was pulled down into the house, etc.) and people expect Ruby to just watch again? She can’t. She literally can’t. Even Ren (our logical one) held Jaune back when he tried to stop Ruby. He gets that she can’t stand on the sidelines. She couldn’t before and she sure as hell can’t now. 

There’s even more I can say: like the fact that Ruby and Qrow were fighting so well in tandem - Qrow blocking Tyrion’s strikes at Ruby doesn’t make her a hinderance. As we’ve seen, protecting your teammates is incredibly common and it makes sense that they would fight well/potentially better as a team since Qrow was the one who trained her. Or the fact that the distraction wasn’t Ruby’s fault at all, an accident - if anything Qrow was the one who de-stabilized the house by baiting Tyrion onto the rotten parts of the roof. The fact that fighting together is what allowed them beat Tyrion, and it’s amazing that after everything mentioned in point 5, Ruby was able to keep her cool after seeing Qrow injured and still get a critical strike in at Tyrion. That takes a huge amount of control in battle. It takes maturity. 

For me this fight was pretty damn perfect, a way of showing us Ruby’s personality and her growth. I get that the fandom adores Qrow (god knows I do too), but reducing that fight to “omg Ruby got him injured” really takes away from the incredible amount of detail Rooster Teeth has given us. 

But yeah. That’s my piece. Happy holidays! ;) 

*~*~*~STUDY BREAK SNACKS~*~*~* (art by maria-putri ✨) 

apple chips - preheat oven to 225 F - slice apples as thin as possible - sprinkle some cinnamon/cinnamon sugar on the apples (optional) - (works best on a baking rack) place on tray and put in over for 1-2 hrs (you might need to cook them for longer depending on the thickness of your chips!)

sweet crispy roasted chickpeas - preheat oven to 375 F - rinse and drain chickpeas - place chickpeas on baking tray and bake for about 45min - 1 hr - in a bowl, mix olive oil, honey, and cinnamon sugar (you can eyeball the measurements and change it to your personal preference) - once the chickpeas are dry, put them into the bowl that holds the sweet sauce and mix it all in.  - once you are done coating the chickpeas, place them back in the oven for 10 mins

savory crispy roasted chickpeas - follow the sweet crispy roasted chickpeas but replace the sauce with olive oil, sriracha, and garlic powder

frozen yogurt berries - take a spoon and dump your yogurt yogurt into your mold (you can use an ice tray) - add berries into your mold (i like blueberries, raspberries, and black raspberries) - freeze!

apple sandwiches - core your green apple and red apple (it’s okay if you only have one kind) - cut the apples! semi-thick so the slices are durable - add nutella (or peanut butter!) on one side of the apple slice - sprinkle on some oats on top of the spread - sandwich them together!

avocado toast - toast your choice of bread - in a bowl mush your avocado - once the toast is finishes, spread your mushed avocado on the bread - squeeze a bit of lemon onto the toast + avocado and sprinkle chili and pepper!

ants on celery - take celery sticks and spread peanut butter on the inside - place raisins (or choco chips!) on top of the peanut butter spread

banana bee smoothie - 1 cup of milk (low fat) - 1 cup of non-fat greek yogurt - tbsp of honey (OR MORE) - 1 ripe banana - handful of blueberries - pinch of cinnamon! - BLEND

sweet apple banana smoothie (my fav ✨) - 1 sliced apple (preferably any sweet apple) - 1 ripe banana - a tbsp honey - 1 cup of low fat milk - a pinch of cinnamon sugar - BLEND

messy simple fruit bowl - 1 sliced ripe banana - a handful of blueberries - place fruits into a bowl and drizzle with honey on top o’fruity rice cakes! - spread peanut butter onto ricecake - place sliced fruit on top (you can use bananas, strawberries, blueberries, etc) - drizzle with honey (optional)

Whats you favorite fairy tale? (Essay)

My favorite fairy tale or the fairy tale that means the most to me is the Three Followers. The story of of one master and three followers who were the best of friends, until ambition, envy, loneliness, and duty took hold of the friendship they had and destroyed it. Destroying themselves in the process. This story is supposed to teach children that although these feeling do not have to be evil if you let them take a hold of you and emotions get the best of you, whatever you were trying to achieve will be beyond you reach. Something we should have thought of when the arguments began. Thought I will not go into details, this happened to my friends and I. These emotions turned our friendship that we once thought as hard as steel into tatters and shreds. We fought and blamed one another because of a desicion that was not in our control. In the end all that has left was anger, guilt, and memories of a happier time. A lot of time has passed since then, and for all that my friends did to me from verbally and physically, to the scars they gave me both literally and emotionally, I can say I have forgiven them for it. Some might think me a fool for it but if I were to stay with the anger and guilt they would have taken over me until nothing was left. I didn't want that. "The past doesn't define who you are, it just a starting point for who are going to be." I wasn't going to become a person who held grudges, never forgetting what had divided us but one who always remembers the good memories that united us. I hope that one day in the long future we will meet again, though we might not be the best of friends ever again. I hope when our eyes meet and I see not hatred or anger but nostalgia and forgiveness. I hope that day will come.
