#storytelling through music
omg soldier, poet, king is NOT a Christian worship song
folks on tiktok being like YALL DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS ABOUT JESUS??? and "better take it off my dnd playlist now!!!"
it's not about jesus holy fuck, i mean, it is, but it isn't.
Dear Wormwood is a concept album that uses biblical symbolism to talk about an abusive relationship. The Oh Hellos have a whole ass THING about retelling stories (biblical, mythological etc) to use to deal with your own story which is like...a whole thing in storytelling anyway (the new testament is a monomyth yall, Hero's Journey 1.0, in that regard everything is biblical)
Dear Wormwood is put in the context of someone writing letters (inspired by The Screwtape Letters, CS Lewis) to their abuser. "Soldier, Poet, King" is from the perspective of the protagonist, on the receiving end of the abuse, who (after the song "Exeunt") is escaping from the abuse and attempting to continue their life outside of it. The person who is the soldier, poet, king, is the protagonist. "your city" is the abusive relationship. "Wormwood" is the devil of this person's life.
If you look on Genius, yeah the story is about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In context? It's about the Second Coming of the protagonist. The rebirth they get after escaping.
The ending song of the album, "Thus Always to Tyrants", the last line of the album is
Where I go, will you still follow? Will you leave your shaded hollow? Will you greet the daylight looming? Learn to love without consuming?
The protagonist is attempting to mentally escape from the abuse, worried about carrying the trauma into the next relationship.
Soldier Poet King is not about Jesus. It's about fighting. It's about escaping the cycle of abuse. It's about the power that resides in stories, about people who have experienced this before and succeeded. It's about using those stories and learning from them.
Keep the shit on your dnd playlist, it's sort of the whole point.
Date someone who understands you're a work in progress but still adores you for the absolute fucking masterpiece that you already are.
How did Ballister and Ambrosius get together in the movie, in your eyes?
i've seen quite a few people talking about how nd stevenson and the producers of nimona underdid ballister's character to allow nimona to shine, but consequentially made bal a wet noodle.
i argue that ballister is not a wet noodle, he's just being thrown into situations that's he's never dealt with before, situations entirely outside of his control.
we know that ballister was literally the top of his class. when he's fighting the knights, he absolutely dominates. he initiates the fighting (they're surrounded, swords are drawn, but nothing starts until he gives nimona the okay to go wild). he is in control and he knows what he's doing.
his unwillingness to take risks isn't because he's a wet noodle, it's because he had to learn to stay in line to get ahead. he's been training since he was a kid. he's been facing classism and societal pressure since he was a kid. he learned that the best course of action is to not cause trouble, to not act out, to do what he is told. he has been raised with systems and rules and regulations and that's all he knows.
then the knighting ceremony happens and shit goes down. all of a sudden, everything that he's been working for for decades collapses. and then nimona appears and she is so radically different from him and she is encouraging him to do things he doesn't want to do. and he doesn't know how to handle her, he's used to obeying authority and doing as he's told, he doesn't have social awareness.
and it might just be my autism speaking, but you don't shove a knight in the deep end and then blame them for floundering.
doing my damnedest to free myself of the “just gotta get through this week” “only x more days til the weekend” mindset & learn to appreciate each day for whatever it is lest i be driven to madness

You should chug a bottle of vinegar, just to mark it down as something you did: a leverage above others, a bragging right, the greatest moment of regret you’ve faced and finally… motivation knowing the pain has a low chance of getting worse
Can you repeat that but instead of repeating it say something completely different thank you
