I think "no child labor laws for the chosen one"/"forced to grow up too fast" readings of Captain Marvel/Shazam come from retconning Captain Marvel to be 100% Billy. Older readings have him as a separate but overlapping consciousness, almost like an imaginary friend.

OG Billy Batson, street kid, was for kids growing up through the Great Depression and WWII. At that point you've already grown up too fast. The power fantasy feels more about having an adult who could never leave you, never hurt you, never restrict your freedom or tell you what to do, but would always come when you called to protect you. Maybe I'm rambling but I feel like it's not really "what if a kid had to fix the world's problems" it's more "what if a kid had access to a Magic Word that meant adults and Gods HAD to help them fix the world when they asked. and also the kid got to go to space and meet aliens and wizards and cool things like that"

Relationship status: Widow

Children: 9

Personality:

Strict, kind, affectionate and hard-working. She likes children and loves to cook. She loves her family more than anything in the world, especially all her little grandchildren. Demanding in the kitchen and demanding on the farm. She excels at staying calm and giving advice in times of crisis. She is the rock of her loved ones.

Story:

She was born in Puerto Rico in the summer of 1870. She is the eldest daughter of 4 sisters and the lady of the house since her mother died of illness. She helps her father raise her sisters and keeps the house going. She helped fight in the revolution against Spain as a teenager and took over her family's land and plantations when her father was murdered for being a member of the ‘La Boicotizadora’ movement. She met Scrooge McDuck in 1899. After certain interactions both end up in love with each other however they couldn't stay together because Scrooge's obsession with becoming the ‘Richest Duck in the World’ was bigger than a commitment to young love. He promised to come back for her as soon as he had enough money to take care of her and her sisters; but he never came back.

Rosa, her younger sister, became seriously ill, forcing Marisol to marry Colonel José De la Cruz in order to pay for medical help. 9 children arose from the marriage; 5 males and 4 females. Her eldest son died along with his father on a business trip, leaving her heartbroken and owner of the De la Cruz fortune and rightful owner of her parents' lands. With effort, tears, blood and sweat she managed to create her restaurant chain, and with the help of freed slaves and her family tended her land, earning her wealth for generations to follow.

She doesn't know what happened, but she somehow stopped aging when she reached her 40s and she's still alive for over a century to the present day. She decided to see her immortality as an opportunity to continue caring for her family and her legacy.

This is easily one of my favorite comic moments of all time.

After his wife and brother-in-law (who really was more like his own son) have been brutally murdered, Black Adam went on this terrifying rampage that even the entire JSA couldn’t stop, it was so bad that Shazam/Billy tried begging the Egyptian Gods to take Black Adam’s powers away from him, which they refused, so instead he made a deal with them to change the word “SHAZAM!” that he and Black Adam use to transform into a new secret word that only Billy knows.

That way Black Adam gets to keep his powers, but he simply wouldn’t be able to access them, since he doesn’t know what word he needs to shout and how could he? It can literally be any word in existence?!?

So imagine his shock, when one day the powerful and ancient ruler of Khandaq, decided to sit at a random dinner (after a long hard journey across the world, which would have been a lot more easier on him if he had his powers) and basically went “say, the kid next to me is sure drinking a delicious-looking smoothie, can I please have one of those….ah….chocolate egg creams?” then suddenly transformed back to his immortal body for the fist time in forever?

did I already post abt the random old lobo and cap marvel fight here bc that’s maybe my unironic cap marvel hall of fame fights I’m being so genuine rn.

like blah blah x char adopts billy y character discovers he’s a child n feels sorry for him blah blah black adam actually does care for him. WHAT ABT MY LOBO OUT TO GET CAP MARVEL FOR JUST EXISTING TRUTHERS ? the dynamic cap just loves to bring out in every random villain ever. where are you

also I deadly miss the era where cap spoke like a medieval knight but also still asked for milkshakes. an elite duality. let cap call ppl swine again.

it’s very interesting to me that even in billys peak years mingling in teams during postcrisis he doesn’t necessarily have much strong reoccurring bonds with characters outside fawcett. like aside from the trinity who do crop up once in a while - not often bruce and diana even less - I think a lot of writing back then unconsciously or consciously wrote him out to be The Outlier in whatever team he’d be in. jla was that culmination of him being team friendly, where everybody listened to him but only because he brought things to the table that were clearly different from what others were experiencing. and jsa was a step deeper and further at the same time bc of courtney and adam’s role in the team. he was the one set aside there too, something clearly temporary like a bodyguard/limited time role, and even the courtney arc didn’t ground him like how that normally would for a char. jli, like the og jli, he was … well if we took that spot for him seriously he also wasn’t ever fully dissolved into that team either, seemingly of his own rejection of assimilating.

cap marvel was in every event and crisis. everybody knows him, likes him. he’s been on nearly every team. it’s just very noticeable and telling to me that after all this, ALL of it, there’s no ties that bind him to really any dc char as strongly as many established characters have with each other a la teen titans or trinity or even just basic “x hero is known to be best friends/relies on with y hero for a period in their comic history”. I don’t think i can name even one outstanding, consistent relationship like that? and obvs aside from clark bc dc’s inevitable comparison games w them complicates how organic their bond can get to me. just. ok. even if cap marvel has his family freddy for most of his appearances in postcrisis was actively establishing his own existence as an individual hero in other teams and outside of their own comics you never saw mary and billy teaming up during many crises. in this case and maybe all of it is a writing gap at best.

but altogether the full read is just. cap marvel/billy is meant to be unable to really connect fully with other people on this plane, possibly because he’s been relegated to this “bridge between worlds” role which also means he’s 50% here and 50% gone, which notoriously is a bad sign for fully integrating into a single world. rmr in kingdom come when supes said “More than anyone who ever existed, you know what it’s like to live in both worlds.” @ billy? i feel that comes at the cost of being able to connect with anyone fully and wholly then, in either of his forms. which hurts im sure, since connections are all he ever wants. he’ll just never get it the way he imagines.

This raises profound questions about what Captain Marvel is.

I want to give life to one of the fanfics ideas I have in the back of my mind, but with “I'm still here” at the beginning of process, I don't want to risk it. Look what happens to my Ducktales fic! Still debating if I should continue that one or eliminate it...

Something I hate about writing is that when I'm in the middle of writing a story, another one is forming in my head, and then the idea is so good that I have to write it before I forget it, but then I forget the one I was writing first!!

Like, I have to sit down and list all my ideas in the order they appear in my head so I can concentrate on the one I'm writing, and that way, I don't forget anything!!

Has this happened to someone before? I will like to hear your tricks and methods of saving stories ideas!

Okay, so some months ago, some people of Ducktales crew reveal a little clue from Season 3 finale using the “Wash your hands!” example.
