My Last Night With You

A/N : finally I’ve figured out something to write for Kento !! Figured in celebration of the 4th instalment in the kingdom series has been released on Netflix this is a soft of celebration of that !! I really tried (emphasis on TRY) to mimic the way Shin speaks in the movies onto English but that’s really hard due to the language difference LOL. Hope you enjoy nonetheless!

Warnings : Shin is an adult, not following the storyline of the movies &/or manga and is definitely not historically accurate !! Mention of Shin’s backstory as a slave, mention of war, heavy make out session but nothing else !! SPOILERS FOR THE 4TH MOVIE U HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!

Pairings : Shin x (afab) reader

Summary : as the crown princess and sole heir to the throne of Han your father decides to join forces with Qin in the fight against Zhao. To show his loyalty to the king of Qin you & your father set to meet the king at his estate in Qin. There you meet a loyal friend of the king, the talented peasant Shin, whom fancy your interest…

︶⊹︶︶୨୧︶︶⊹︶︶⊹︶︶୨୧︶︶⊹︶

“It’s a great honour to finally meet you” you say, bowing to the king sitting on his throne, behind you stood both your guards and a couple of maids whom accompanied you and your father on this journey all the way to meet the king of Qin… As the sole heir to the throne you were set to become the queen of Han, the smaller of the kingdoms of china by acre, but your father was determined after hearing about the death of general Ohki that you and your kingdom must do your part in this awful war.

Your father had always been a wise a man, someone you and your people looked up to, but he had never been the one to make noise in the war, never wanted to put your people up for it knowing you were far smaller than any of the neighbouring kingdoms. But there was one thing your father believed in more far greater than killing, peace… so the moment he heard about the king of Qin having plans on uniting China and put and end to this war, he knew he had to finally step in.

So there you were, bowing in front of the king, forced to follow to a foreign kingdom to be shown off as the trophy your father seem to believe you are. Many nights you had laid in bed curious on what your father actually believed your worth was, was in measurable?

You are thrown off your thoughts when you suddenly felt the entire courtroom have their eyes upon you, seemingly waiting for an answer to a question you never heard in the first place. You clear your throat and speak up…

“I’m sorry, what did you say, your highness?” You ask, looking at the king whom looked at you with his piercing stoic eyes…

“I was asking if your journey here was a pleasant one? If you’re exhausted my princess I can arrange a room for you to rest” the king speak up.

“Oh no no, thank you but… I’m quite alright, the journey was as good as it could be, just awfully long” you admit.

“We heard about the death of general Ohki, it’s a huge loss and we wish to pay our gratitude for his sacrifice” your father spoke up. “And like I said in my letter, I do believe we can help. We may not be a big kingdom but we have our resources and I want to put an end to this war just as much as you want to, my king” your father said, determination in his eyes. This had been his wishes all along, he had just been too worried for your kingdoms safety to act until now when he knew he could have Qin on his side…

“Very well. Let us speak about this more over dinner later today” King Eisei responds…

“Very well, however I must ask, whom is this Shin of Hishin I kept hearing rumours about on my journey here?” Your father asks, which made the whole courtroom look at the king with big eyes, waiting for what king Eisei had to say about the mighty Shin…

Despite what you expected his reaction to the question would be you see the man sitting on the throne sigh and he roll his eyes. “Shin just come out already, I know you’re here” he spoke up. You look around confused in the room, waiting for this almighty shin whom slayed so many despite his short time in the military to appear. You wasn’t sure what you expected, perhaps a strong man, dressed in uniform, showing great status and strength… what you didn’t expect was for suddenly a man jumping from the ceiling right in front of you, having you letting out a quick gasp in surprise as he had caught you off guard. Some of your guards rose their weapons as they had heard your gasp as if it was in their nature to act on any kind of noise from you. Your father quickly raised his hand and signaled for them to drop their guards which they quickly did.

This was the almighty shin of Hishin? It was a peasant boy! He surely had to be your age, hair in a messy bun in the back, dirty clothes and a rather smug smirk on his face.

“Really Sei? If you knew I was there then why didn’t you save me the struggle of clinging onto that metal piece up there and just allowed me to be present?” The boy said, wiping his numbing hands on his clothes to create some friction. Your eyes were widen, the boy spoke so casually? So rude? Called the king… sei? What does that even mean?

Your concerns definitely didn’t seem to bother king Eisei who didn’t even move a muscle in his face to show any kind of displeasure of the rude boy in front of you. “Shin, this is the king and crown princess of Han, they’re here to assist aid with the war” he said. “As you heard from your spectacular hiding spot they’re hoping for an end just as us” King Eisei speak up. The boy turn and look at you and your father, looking at you up and down, before nodding slowly.

“Took you guys long enough!”

Your feet are light as your tippy toe with speed out in the dark night, heart beating heavy in your chest as you tried to navigate in the unknown palace grounds. You waited until the night had fallen until you made your escape.

All you wished was to see the moon and then slip right back to your chambers that King Eisei had so gracefully given you for your stay. You had always had this thing, this fascination of things you had no knowledge of. You had spent hours upon hours reading through every written letter you could acquire in the library at home, about the World beyond, and how the world were before the war.. you wanted to experience it, piece by piece. However it could never happen, being the sole heir to the throne you were the most precious thing to your kingdom, which meant you had to be in pitch perfect condition when you met your fate and sat down at the throne as the queen of Han. Your destiny? Stay inside your palace walls, give birth you an heir and then die peacefully in your bed after years of reign… you? You wished to explore, know more about the world, for gods sake you didn’t even know anything about the peasants of your own country! However as the guards constantly had their eyes on you and made sure you never went into trouble you only had a few hours in the middle of the night that you could escape and feel a sense of freedom, and you wanted to feel this feeling in Qin too… perhaps it would feel different? Perhaps it could be a change? Perhaps…

“What are you doing out here, Princess?”

You let out a screech, quickly feeling a pair of hands covering your mouth with the other holding the back of your head study so you couldn’t remove the strangers hand from your mouth… Your eyes meet with… Shin?

“If you scream and I’ll get caught even remotely near you I doubt the rumours about me on the battlefield will ever stop your father for detaching my head from my body, so I’ll remove my hands and promise to not scream, okay? Nod if you get it” he whisper, keeping the eye contact between you as your breath was pitched due to the sudden jumpscare. You quickly nod and see the boy sigh in relief as he remove his hands from you.

“Sorry about that, now… once again I’m asking. what are you doing out here at this hour? Alone for that matter!” Shin asks, quickly raising a brow before crossing his arms over his chest, looking down at you, whom was only dressed in you nightgown.

You try to think, think of a simple yet effective lie to be told at this moment, but your mind was blank. You couldn’t come up with a single lie to put you out of this situation, so you did what any woman would do…

“I could ask the same to you? It’s way past midnight, you know?” You answer, which makes a scoff leave the peasants mouth as he allow his mouth to fold upwards in a slight smirk. It was obvious, you amused him.

“Well I’m a mare peasant whom no one would bat an eye if I came to harms way, you’re a future queen” he stated. “Besides” he started, then picked up a small dagger that had been secured in his belt, throwing it around between each one of his hands. “I can take care of myself in tight situations, which you cannot, Princess”

It was your time to scoff, you roll your eyes and tilt your head to the side as you look up at him. “I would not call a warrior that King Eisei speak so highly of to be a mare peasant” you say, giving him a crooked smile.

You can see that he thinks a bit on what he should respond to your comment, instead he just let out a sigh and rest his back against the stone wall behind him with his arms once again crossed over his chest, looking down at you.

“I won’t tell anyone if you won’t” he finally speaks up.

“Deal”

And that’s how it started, every night you were wide awake, excited for your next meeting with Shin. Yes, this definitely made your engagement with the next days discussions with the king rather hazy as you were half asleep throughout it, sleeping in as long as you could before your father sent your maids to wake you up. Your sudden exhaustion did not go unnoticed but you blamed it on the weather, or the poor sleep you had the night before filled with a nightmare or two, or whatever else your mind could come up with at the spot.

Shin told you about his life, stories from his past and the real incidents he had witnessed on the battlefield, fully immersed into his stories which you were just as interested in hearing. In exchange of his crazy stories you told him stories from your home, about gods and goblins that you had grown up hearing your mother tell you all about, which despite being obviously fake he was just as happy listening to you, looking at you with his big eyes…

Oh those eyes… oh you had gotten quite fond of these memories you and shin created every night as soon as the moon came out. Your attachment to shin was something you had to keep to yourself as soon as the sun rose though, knowing far too well as the princess of Han your father would never accept your friendship… Great warrior or not, he was a peasant born a slave, he would lose his head the moment your father found out he was alone with you at night… even if it was just to tell stories…

“Tomorrow is my last day, you know?”

“Hm?” Shin asks as he sat on the hill next to you, looking out at the night sky. Just like many nights he had taken you to a cliff right on the outskirts of the palace, from the edge of the sharp cliff you could see all over the noble men’s village along with all the stars and the moon, however not a soul could see you two from there. It was just you and the moon as your witness, it was perfect…

“Tomorrow, my father and I will return to Han to set up the troops to send them out to fight for Qin”

“Ah” was all he said, slowly looking down at the grass and starts plucking out a few stars, kneading them into small balls in his hands using his fingers.

“You’ll be sent out again, together with Hishin right?” You ask slowly… feeling a lump in your throat build. Usually Shin was the most talkative of you two, always speaking in such casual manner, never giving in whilst coming up with a snarky remark to spit right back at you. Princess or not, he made you feel more happy than any noble man or king you’d ever encountered.

“Yep” he says, popping the p with his lips, moving his head up and looked up at the night sky, taking a deep breath. “You almost sound worried, I’m no one to put your worries out for, I’ll make it back here no matter what” he says, clearly trying to sound like his normal self but there was a hint of sadness in his tone, which made your heart ache even more.

“I’ll miss you, Shin” you just answer, which made his head quickly turn and faced you, looking directly into your eyes for a few second before once again looking down, sighing softly.

“I’ll miss you too” he admits, which catches you off guard a bit… he didn’t seem like the type to admit vulnerability to any extent, even from the wounds from the battlefield he seemed to heal inhumanly fast without much scarring, only a few that you had seen on his body. Instead of answering back you slowly move closer to him on the grass. In a moment of bravery flooding over you, you reach out and take his hand in yours, looking into his eyes as you sat shoulder to shoulder in the grass with the light night breeze floor between your bodies. You feel him intertwine your fingers, rubbing your palm with his thumb. A slight smile escape his lips, your heart beating fast in your chest, so fast in fact you were certain he must have felt it as well. You decide to break the silence.

“I-“ you start, but you had no chance to finish whatever sentence that was about to leave your lips as you felt his mouth on yours in a kiss. Your eyes widen and body stiffen in surprise as he had caught you off guard before your body realised what was happening and relaxed before closing your eyes and kissed him back. You can feel him letting go off your hand, cupping your cheeks with his hands, grazing his thumbs on your cheeks as your hand travel around his neck, holding onto his neck steadily as you kept the kiss. The kiss itself was slow and deliberate, as if you two had all the time in the world, all alone, together.

When the kiss eventually came to its end your mouths parted way, breaths heavy as your foreheads resting against each others. None of you speak up this time, instead you hold onto each other, feeling his thumb brush your cheek. Before you could think on what to do next you felt yourself being the one to connect your mouths again, this time you swing your leg over his lap, straddling him with ease despite your skirt being somewhat in the way. He easily kiss you back, moving his hands from your cheeks with one holding up his upper body whilst the other rest on your waist, holding onto you with a steady grip as you two shared the kiss. Mouths and teeth clashing together, tongues spreading saliva as if it was the first meal you two have had for years, breathing hastily and rapidly through your nose. It was all so different from what you had ever experienced before.

As your mouths part ways your breaths are heavy. Your eyes flutter open and are met by his…

“I’ll really miss you, Shin”

“We still have this last night together, so let’s make it count, Princess”.
