being a hopeless romantic when society is fixated on hookup culture, “situationships” and emotional unavailability makes me feel like I'm in the bottom pits of hell. i yearn for pure romance. waiting for the fairytale I have always dreamed of to come true. but also thinking I won't be loved the way I love is a curse.

Today someone said to me"not everything is about colonisation" and all I could think about was the irony that they were wearing a bikini swimsuit.

Bikini is a colonial misspelling of the indigenous name for the Pikinni atoll. It was one of the many places in the Pacific where Western countries tested atomic bombs. In order to carry out the nuclear testing at Bikini, the USA relocated the islanders to an atoll with no shelter, inadequate fresh water, and so little food that some islanders starved to death. They were exposed to radioactive fallout anyway. Castle Bravo, the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated by the USA, was tested at Bikini and sent radioactive particulate as far away as India, the USA and Europe. After detonating 24 atomic bombs on and around the atoll, the US told the islanders that it was safe to return despite knowing that radiation levels were (and still remain) dangerously high. Generations of islanders are still paying the price with their health and their lives.

The guy who created the bikini swimsuit named it after Bikini Atoll. He said that he wanted it to be "a bombshell" and "explosive" on the scale of a nuclear bomb. He said that "like the bomb, the bikini is small and devastating" and "atom bombs reduce everybody to primitive costume."

The point of this post isn't to suggest that we should stop saying bikini. It's a word in our language now, for better or for worse. My point is that colonialism and white supremacy are in everything. How do you heal, how do you move on, when the violence is embedded into our very vocabulary?

To white people out there, if there is a POC open and willing to call out racist and problematic behavior, the best thing to do to be an anti-racist ally is to support the POC trying to speak and limit the amount of which you add your two cents.

While the intent is good and appreciated and actually helpful when there isn't a POC around to speak for themselves, white people talking about the complex issues that POC bring up in mixed spaces will always make space for misunderstanding, removing nuance, and distorting the message POC are trying to say.

Always remember, as much as you care and try to learn about the issues POC have, you will not know the topic more in depth, more personally, and more intensely than someone with lived experience.

This also applies to POC that disagree with what most POC say.

If a POC disagrees with what you've heard other POC saying, it is not your place to tell them that they are wrong - you don't have the life experience to understand the topic enough to argue at other POC. Leave POC discourse with POC to other people who have the lived experience.

Know your place and stay in your lane, else you run a huge risk of being a white knight and speaking over POC and derailing the Point of any complaints that POC are trying to get heard.

Hey, let's talk about anons like this, because I know some people haven't been in a position to see the patterns these play out in on broader scale and may indeed not spot the trap.

And it is a trap.

An ask like this has several purposes.

First, it uses social justice language in passive aggressive and manipulative ways to try to coerce a behavior. In this case, the desired behavior is usually for the recipent to participate in community shunning and/or harrassment. The language above is intended to put the recipient on the defensive where, in the haste to disassociate themself from the Bad Thing, they quickly disassociate themself from the bad person, often with no particular fact checking or evidence.

The message is also intended to create a sense of being surveilled and judged by an unknown amount of people with unknown amount of social power and an unknown amount of relevance to your life.

Notice that these asks are usually framed as if they are coming from a follower or potential follower, someone who is addressing you personally and who cares about your opinion and who your blog has an effect on. However this is usually.... very much not the case. If you've ever had the misfortune to watch a gossip campaign from like this from the outside, you will very quickly notice that messages like this get sent in mass batches to dozens and dozens of strangers. (You can often turn these up with a tumblr search, if you look.)

The sender does not know you and probably does not follow you. They have a person they don't like (possibly for their stated reason and possibly not), and they are going through the reblogs of a post from that blog and mass messaging *everyone* with a form letter. They will not see your response and they will probably never even see your blog again.

Which brings us to the second goal of whisper campaigns like this:

Notice that I blacked out the names above? That's because when the recipient answers anonymous asks like this, they provide a platform for the opinion on their blog. An anonymous message like this that gets posted doesn't just spread gossip and apply pressure to the recipient, it is spread to the recipient's entire community.

The *goal* is to get access to your community. The *goal* is to use you as a soapbox.

Is the information accurate? Did anyone check? Does the anon have an ulterior social motive? BIG SHRUG

If you go into the comments on one of these whisper campaigns you will see that *most people never bother to check.*

They assume good faith from a follower, they're off balance defending themselves, and they jump straight to conciliation.

It's a really, really effective form of social manipulation, and really really commonly misused.

Quiet Kid ! Who keeps to himself, always seated in the back of the class. Whose only friends are those on his computer.

Quiet Kid ! Who nobody knows the name of. Everybody asking who that is when a sub teacher calls his name during attendance.

Quiet Kid ! Who is extremely awkward, even if he wanted to talk to people and make friends he has no idea how he would. So he doesn’t make the effort, keeping to himself and just doing his best to get through school.

Popular Reader ! Who is the complete opposite of quiet kid.

Popular Reader ! Who is extremely social, known because of how kind she is as well as her amazing looks and outfits.

Popular Reader ! Who knows everybody. Who has all the info about anything and everything. Always know the drama, despite never being involved in any.

Popular Reader ! Who’s shocked to see a different face sat in the back of her art class. Assuming it’s a new student.

Popular Reader ! Who goes up to the new face and introduces herself.

Quiet Kid ! Who responds with a dry “I know.” Before explaining how he’s always gone to school here and has two other classes with Popular Reader.

Popular Reader ! Who apologizes, face flush with embarrassment before leaving Quiet Kid alone. Returning back to her big friend group who asks who she was talking to before changing the subject and forgetting all about it.

Quiet Kid ! Whose face is also flush with embarrassment. For different reasons then reader.

Quiet Kid ! Whose face has a big blush because the prettiest girl in school just talked to him ??

Popular Reader ! Who now goes out of her way to interact with Quiet Kid. Always waving at him and doing her best to make small conversation with him.

Quiet Kid ! Who always responds dryly, making popular reader think he really doesn’t like her.

Quiet Kid ! Who doesn’t know how to deal with this sudden attention. This being the most social interaction he’s had with someone in real life other than his mother.

Quiet Kid ! Who is invited to Reader’s house to work on the project. Who accepts with a quiet okay, before he rushes off to class. His face all pink. This is the first time anyone has ever wanted him to come over.
