LMFAOOOO IâM CRYING
drunk sqq has something to say...
âYou really hold your grudges (jichou).â
âIâm afraid Shizun hasnât seen what Iâm really like when I hold a grudge. ⊠But if I were to say that, toward Shizun, I only hold memories (ji), not grudges (chou). I probably wouldnât be believed, right?â
I like this little linguistic maneuver in Luo Bingheâs response that breaks down the commonly used word èź°ä» (jichou/âto bear grudgesâ) into its two components: èź° (ji/âto rememberâ) and ä» (chou/âhatred/hateâ or âenmityâ) to create the somewhat unconventional phrase ćȘèź°ïŒäžä» (zhÇ jĂŹ, bĂč chĂłu/only remember, no hate/grudges). Neat.
Shen Jiu: That's it! You're head disciple!
Shen Yuan: I REFUSE!
Shen Jiu: Your refusal doesn't matter
Shen Yuan: This is ridiculous! I don't want to be head disciple! Make Ming Fan be Head Disciple
Shen Jiu: I am the Peak Lord of Qing Jing Peak and it is my decision and my decision alone who is or is not my head disciple and your objections and protestations are irrelevant
Shen Yuan: *quiet and threatening* Fine. I'll be Head Disciple. I'll be the best fucking Head Disciple this peak ever had
Shen Jiu: *also threatening* I look forward to it
Ning Yingying: ...I don't think that's how appointments of head disciples usually go.

*guy who has repressed every feeling he's ever had* yeah I'm just really good at rolling with the punches I guess haha
there's only one thing worse than an awful book, and that is an awful book with ONE tantalisingly compelling element
gay ass snippet of my oc lore
So we've all seen this scene, right?
This scene is a fundamental piece of YQY characterization to me. There's a lot to be said about how this ties into YQY's desire to protect, provide for, and spoil SJ, but today I am here to talk about how this man would be really into financial domination. I truly can't believe that only one such qijiu fic exists (thank you to kat8cha I owe you my life).Â
YQY doesnât like spending money on himselfÂ
YQY belongs to SJ
YQY loves providing for SJÂ
SJ would rather take than receive
(Most of this post is more headcanon than directly evidenced, but I think itâs a logical jump from canon!)
This was the starting point of my thinking when I started spinning qijiu findom in my brain back in 2022. Yue Qingyuan, in my opinion, doesnât like taking care of himself. I think heâs better about taking care of his physical needs to some degree because heâs aware that the consequences of him passing out or qi deviating would affect more than just himself, but his motivation is a.) to be a well functioning machine capable of fulfilling his role as sect leader, and b.) to Not Fuck Up. (One of adult YQYâs core traits is that he lives in perpetual fear of fucking up. More on that another day). Aside from the risk of heart demons damaging his cultivation, YQY doesnât see any possible consequences to neglecting his mental health.Â
And so, does YQY really deserve a comfortable bed? Does he really need any nice wall hangings in the parts of his home that guests will never see? The only seemingly indulgent purchases YQY makes are those needed to uphold his image as sect leader, like fine clothes and hair oils. Those are functionally business expenses, because YQY is aware that how he presents himself reflects on the entire sect. (SJ surely doesnât see it that wayâ he only sees YQY putting on the affects of nobles and spending money like water, as bad as any of the natal lords in this sect). In the modern era, YQY would come home, take off his perfectly tailored suit, and flop face first onto his bare mattress on the floor.
I think that if SJ had asked, YQY would be willing to give him basically anything he owned. Fundamentally, YQY puts SJâs life before his own. He would not have walked into near-certain death long after SJ became irredeemable to the rest of the cultivation world if that was not the case. Yue Qingyuan literally offers SJ his life.Â
YQY would die if he thought it would make SJ happy. If YQYâs life and the sword that is his life can be forfeited to SJ, whatâs a bit of money, or the material possessions that YQY cares little for? Whatâs his is SJâs, and if it would make SJ happy, YQY would not hesitate to hand over whatever SJ asked for.Â
Although the fanon of YQY being overly solicitous and constantly pushing gifts on SJ contracts canon (as far as I can tell, there's not a single instance in the novel of specfically Yue Qingyuan giving SQQ a gift-- at most, there's references to all the peak lords doing so), I think thereâs a little truth to itâ if YQY thought SJ would allow him to, he would absolutely give SJ whatever he thought the man might like or need. I would go as far as to say that he probably longs to do so. He is a service dog, after all.
Yue Qingyuan most often expresses his affection as protecting, taking care of, or expressing concern for others. Most of his 'wet puppy in the rain' moments in canon are not due to his own misery, but because he is concerned for SJ or SQQ. Yue Qingyuan is bad at existing for his own sake; he is constantly shown to be putting others and the sect above himself, and none more so than SJ. Personally. I donât think this is just due to YQYâs strength of character. I think he gains a sense of purpose and identity from being the one to protect and take care of others. There is a reason I say YQY had eldest daughter syndrome: he needs someone to take care of For His Health.
Being allowed to give or buy things for SJ, or have SJ use YQY's assets to buy things himself, would fulfill YQY's needs. It would give him vital enrichment. After their long estrangement where SJ constantly ignores YQY, someone as simple as being able to express affection by providing for SJ would literally be a privilege to YQY.Â
That's all well and good, but doesn't that just mean YQY's wants to be SJ's sugar daddy? Why do I specify findom instead? Well that's where we get to SJ.
SJ is a paranoid person, and many gifts come with some expectation of reciprocity. I think SJâs ability to appreciate gifts would be hampered by his immediate unasked question: âwhat do you want from me?â. While gifts for Peak Lord Shen may pose less of an issue, as heâs able to quickly identify the motives from deference to bribery, gifts to Shen Jiu The Person may pose more of an issue, as the lack of a clear motive besides expressing affection leaves room for SJâs mind to invent one. Honestly, SJ reacts similarly to most kindnessâ he himself is so rarely kind without a motive, so itâs hard for him to imagine that others might not be the same. (Any kindness Xiao Jiu showed his Qi-ge doesnât countâ SJ was only protecting what belonged to him đ€).
Because of this twisty brain maze heâs made for himself, SJ is far more comfortable taking something than receiving it. SJ learned as a child that he will be given nothing, and that taking things is necessary for survival, and he had no compunctions about it. Taking is an act of initiative and aggression: taking is winning. I actually think this is how he framed begging in his mindâ by thinking of it as tricking people, he gets to feel like heâs won or stolen something, rather having to linger in the pity.Â
Gifts, affection, and love can all be given this treatment. If SJ tricked YQY into loving him and must now cling to his rightfully earned possession, SJ neednât address his own feelings. If YQYâs money is something SJ takes, he gets to feel like heâs taking advantage of YQY instead of having to feel like heâs reliant on YQY or like he's YQY's charity case.
SJ is a massive control freak, and he is always most comfortable in a relationship when he can tell himself heâs in control of the dynamic, even if that makes the relationship appear unhealthy to an outside observer. Once YQY catches on to this, he would do absolutely everything he could to accommodate SJ (without SJ realizing heâs being accommodated ofc).
This is what peak performance looks like.
(Side note: there are a couple other ways to execute a findom for dynamic for qijiu! The main two I can think of are "Stupid Qi-geâs money is so easy to steal: obviously I must steal it First, and use it Better, to Protect Him." and "Stupid Qi-ge is languishing/never takes care of himself. I must take his money and use it to force him to do self care." My tastes run angstier tho đ)
started rereading svsss bc I missed shen jiu and qijiu only to be brutally reminded there is only pain and suffering within those pages
Thinking about âDying togetherâ also included a âtogether.â and the fact that qijiu didn't even get that much, in either timeline.
Shen Jiu (I will not degrade myself by explaining what happened) đ€ Yue Qingyuan (I will not degrade you by explaining what happened)
Oneâs mindset is âI wonât defend myself since Iâm unrepentantly evil anywayâ and the otherâs is âI wonât make excuses for myself since I failed you anywayâ
They are made for each other in the worst way possible. I want to grind their heads together; it will not help one bit, since what they need is top-notch therapy/counselling, but wow the urge haunts me
I think YQYâs actual reaction to SJâs death would be a numb kind of âthereâs nothing to do but keep goingâ mindset and then spending years in and out of a dissociative haze (this is basically what I think happened between him finding the ashes of the Qiu manor and running into SJ again), but itâs SO tempting to make him break down properly.
I am so obsessed with the image of Yue Qingyuan trying to get Shen Jiu to take his meds in a modern AU. YQY practically has to wrestle him down and pill him like a cat every evening.
Reunion!!!! Theyâve waited so long! My poor Xiao Jiu came home over a year ago, but at long last his Qi-ge has come for him! He says âstupid Qi-ge, making me wait for so long!â but we all know how happy he is!
Qi-ge has always been the center of Shen Jiu's world
He was what kept Shen Jiu going
His light in the dark
And seeing his Qi-ge whole and hale, after having not come back as promised, shattered his world
And Qi-ge's silence prevented it from ever healing. So the shattered pieces of his life spin and cut and hurt
And his instinct is that this perceived rejection is his fault. Because he is "rotten from the start".
He must be
Because he wished Qi-ge had died rather than abandon him
That's why there is always tension and quarrels
Because when Yue Qingyuan gets too close Shen Jiu gets angry
"How dare Qi-ge act like he cares! It's too little too late! Stop lying to my face!"
But if Yue Qingyuan pulls away Shen Jiu gets angry
"How dare Qi-ge abandon me again! Hasn't he run away enough!? Is he ashamed of me!?"
As long as Yue Qingyuan is silent the pain will continue
But Yue Qingyuan has reasons for not telling
For one, what he went through was as traumatic as what Shen Jiu went through. There are still blood stains from where he beat his head in the caves, desperate to get back to the center of his world.
He has to be ready to speak his truth
Secondly, he thinks it's a poor excuse. In his mind he should have tried harder, left earlier, done something different somehow and kept his promise. All his reasons, now matter how valid we see it, are weak and pathetic in his eyes
To tell Shen Jiu the truth would feel to Yue Qingyuan like he was making excuses for failing. He feels it would be insulting to Shen Jiu to even imply he has legitimate reasons for failing because he doesn't feel it was legitimate
So even though simply talking would heal the rift it's not as easy a fix as it seems
But unless they do Shen Jiu will continue to be shattered glass orbiting Yue Qingyuan
The scene where Shen Jiu threatens Shi Wu is possibly my favorite scene in the whole novel because it tells us so much about qijiu's dynamic, both past and future, and namely, that they're both little freaks (affectionate) who show love in weird ways. I think it particularly exemplifies several of Yue Qingyuan's traits that often go overlooked!
I am just going in order. All excerpts are from the Seven Seas official translation, Volume 4, Chapter 24: Yue Qingyuan and Shen Qingqiu.
âShen Jiu, donât think you can just throw your weight around. You donât own this street. What gives you the right to tell us we canât stay?!â This main street was wide and even, and many people came and went upon it. If one wanted to beg, it was the best and prime location. Some of the passersby watched this group of children fight, but even more hurried on their way. And this new brat had the gall to challenge him. Shen Jiu looked down and around, preparing to find a brick with which to teach him a lesson, when a tall youth happened to walk over. He saw Shen Jiu rolling up his sleeves, head lowered, and hastily went to stop him. âXiao-Jiu, letâs go somewhere else.â [...] With Yue Qi standing in front of him, Shiwu grew bold. He leaned forward and yelled, âEvery time we go to a new place, you always hog the best spot!
From this we know that Shen Jiu, without fail, tries to claim or fight for the best begging spots in every city. This isn't fully textually supported, but add to that the later section that mentions how Shen Jiu was far better at begging than Yue Qi and I think that, on some level, SJ feels responsible for both his and Yue Qi's wellbeing. Chasing off the other children is not just a selfish act, but also a protective one.
According to the orders given to them, Yue Qi should have wailed and wept, but no matter what, he never could manage to cry. Therefore, this task had instead fallen to Shen Jiu, even though he was faking an illness that supposedly left him too feeble to weep. But he was small and his face wasnât too unsightly to look at, so whenever he sobbed and bawled, the passersby found him pitiful and generously opened their wallets. It would have been no exaggeration to call him a money tree.
Xiao Jiu fancies himself the breadwinner lol.
That first youth took the opportunity to tattle. âQi-ge, heâs bullying me.â âThat wasnât bullying, Shiwu,â said Yue Qi. âXiao-Jiu was just joking around.â âWhoâs joking?â said Shen Jiu. âIâm telling him to get lost. This is my territory. Iâll kill anyone who tries to steal it.â
I've anyways found this passage so telling of their eventual adult relationship! First of all, Yue Qi implicitly takes Shen Jiu's side, and immediately defends him. This seems to be taken for granted by all characters, so we can assume this is their standard dyanmic. Yue Qi, notably, does not deny that Shen Jiu was threatening Shiwu. In this situation where SJ is actively gearing up for a fight, it would be a very poor defense, and that's probably true of most messes Xiao Jiu got himself into!Â
Most of Yue Qi's actions in the scene are attempts to de-escalate. This is just my theory, but I think in Yue Qi's mind, who's at fault is much less important than making sure no one gets in trouble with a higher authority. Even if he knows SJ could win the fight, it would only gain SJ more animosity, and possibly the attention of someone who would be a real danger.
I think it's evident how Yue Qi's ethos of keeping their heads down and not causing trouble or drawing too much attention would feed into how he handled Shen Qingqiu's less commendable behavior as an adult and complaints against Shen Qingqiu.
In the brothel scene later in the extras, we can see that he's conscious of their image.Â
Yue Qingyuan yanked Shen Qingqiu off the bed. He was in a rare fit of anger. âWhy are you like this?â âWhy am I like what?â asked Shen Qingqiu. âTwo of Cang Qiong Mountainâs head disciples getting into a huge brawl inside a brothelâdoes that sound good to you?â
Imo, now entrenched in the politics of the cultivation world, YQY sees protecting SQQ's image/reputation as an important part of protecting SQQ. Yue Qi spent his childhood managing Xiao Jiu, and as an adult, he's not able to so easily break the habit, not matter how SQQ scorns him
With Yue Qi standing in front of him, Shiwu grew bold. He leaned forward and yelled, âEvery time we go to a new place, you always hog the best spot! Everyoneâs been sick of you for ages! You think youâre all that? That everyoneâs afraid of you?â âShiwu,â Yue Qi scolded. Amidst the struggle, Shen Jiu kicked Yue Qi in the shin. âIf you want a fight, Iâll give you one. Only losers would blame their spot for their incompetence. You bastardâwhoâs your Qi-ge? I dare you to say that again!â
Now granted these aren't the most cutting insults, but it's SO interesting to me that Shen Jiu doesn't react to the insults directly. To me, this is a little bit of evidence that, even at this age, Shen Jiu had already decided he was a bad guy, and stopped caring about what others thought of him. The glaring exception to that was, ofc, Yue Qi. I think part of the reason that SJ reactions to the "Qi-ge" specifically, is that Shiwu just said that no one likes Shen Jiu, and then tried to align himself with Yue Qi. I think to SJ, he sees a real threat in the idea of someone else stealing Yue Qi, the one person who likes SJ. SJ is so possessive of Yue Qi not just because he's Qi-ge, but also because, without him, Shen Jiu would have nothing and no one.
âYouâre the bastard! I bet youâll get sold off soon and end up a pimp!â Yue Qi didnât know whether to laugh or to cry. âWhere did you learn that kind of nonsense language?!â Then he dragged Shen Jiu off to the side of the road while coaxing him. âAll right, youâre the most competent one here. Even if you didnât pick and choose your spot, youâd be the best. So letâs change streets.â Shen Jiu stepped on his foot. âGet off me! Like Iâm scared! Come on, fight me! Wanna gang up on me? Go ahead!â Of course Yue Qi knew he wasnât scared. If he really let Shen Jiu brawl with the other kids, he would fight dirty. Heâd gouge at their eyes and kick them in the belly or crotch or shin. He was terribly vicious, and the other party would be the one to end up suffering and bawling in terror. Yue Qi forced down a smile. âAre you done stepping on my foot yet? If you are, stop it. Qi-ge will take you somewhere fun.â âWhat shitty âfunâ?â Shen Jiu asked savagely. âThe most fun Iâll have is if theyâre all dead.â Yue Qi looked at him helplessly and shook his head.
Yue Qi only barely scolds Shen Jiu, even when Shen Jiu in the wrong (tried to steal Shiwu's spot and then almost beat up Shiwu). Instead, his reaction is to distract, coax, bribe, and praise him until SJ looses interest in whatever trouble he was going to cause. Yue Qi is so biased, and he spoils him đ. Even when Yue Qi has so little he can give, he managed to spoil Shen Jiu by giving him so much favor, attention, and affection.Â
I think this is something that comes naturally to Yue Qi to the point that he can't help himself from doing the same thing as an adult, even when SJ scorns him. It's just the correct response to seeing a Xiao Jiu! He's the "why do we have hands" meme frÂ

I don't have much to say about this, I just want to remind everyone Yue Qi finds SJ's violent, feral tendencies adorable. This man has no desire to train his cat, and he will insist it's friendly even as it gnaws on his arm.
This single scene shows us the trajectory of qijiu's relationship going forward, the strengths of their relationships that became pitfalls. It allows to imagine what they could have become if not torn apart by a world set to doom them.
on the yqy gets truth serumed thing: we find out because during a peak lord meeting, lqg says smth smth sqq sux and i hate him, and usually what gets said is "shidi is permitted to his own opinion, of course, but blablabla-" what comes out the sect leaders mouth THIS time, however, is "oh fuck your mother you foul tempered brat; jiu can do as he pleases and so help me if he threatens to leave because of this i will use your skin as a rug ^^" no one was ready.
YES
Exactly this is the vibe I picture if Yue Qingyuan got dosed with a truth serum.
Someone says something about how Shen Qingqiu's whoring is dragging the sect's reputation down, but what could they really expect from a man like that. Complete with a meaningful glance. And of course it's expected that Yue Qingyuan will take his side, even if he tries to word it diplomatically, they all know how he is...
And then Yue Qingyuan says "I'm going to break your jaw and rip out your lying tongue for slandering Shen Jiu. We don't even have anything in the rules forbidding sex you stupid piece of-" at which point Liu Qingge and Mu Qingfang both tackle him because something is clearly wrong with him and they can't rule out possession right away.
Everybody is mortified when Mu Qingfang confirms it's a truth pollen, but Shen Qingqiu just sits there completely floored because Yue Qingyuan would commit violence for him? Despite everything?? Then why hasn't he done any of that?! At least put in a little more effort when standing up for him to discourage the rich idiots from picking on him! Useless shixiong.
They wrap Yue Qingyuan in immortal binding cables because they don't trust his word that he always thinks like this and the risk of him acting on it is not one the can take, and he kneels in front of Shen Qingqiu and tells him that he would do anything to have his trust, his love back. If Shen Jiu asks him to rip out his useless, treacherous tongue, to crack open his chest and hand him his still beating heart as proof of his love, he would do so even if it's the last thing he would do in this life.
And Shen Qingqiu swoons because okay, there's something fishy here, but that's the kind of devotion he wants (devotion to match his own) and he is still fucking mad, don't get him wrong, but keep talking he's listening.
He leaves you for Shen Qingqiu
i am NOT doing my paperwork please why am i doing the paperwwork i just wanna storytell not make the paper fuck the underclassmen they should do it instead
Muse and Artist
Being a muse is far exceptional, a role of no other.
The reason that is an artist's affection is just as exceptional.
Capturing the very thing you adore by your own hands feel just as luxurious as having your being appreciated and into a media of art.
Being deemed as worthy of an artist's affection to be immortalized as a piece of art, is as precious as creating it, able to capture your beloved into an art you made by your own hands.
To have the experience of loving, and being loved is one half of each other, a perfect pair.
For that is why, the role of a muse is indeed special, for you receive the tender affection of an artist.
And the role of the artist is as enjoyable, for you're blessed by their very own presence you deem as art not yet portrayed as an oil painting at the main entrance of an art museum.
(im new on tumblr and not a native speaker of english, im sorry if theres some embarassing mistakes! )
Remembering that time I read the bsd manga and Dazai's ability was mistranslated to "Human Failure"
