Harry Potter Rewrite: Help!

I’ve been outlining more or less what I want the final result for my Harry Potter rewrite to look like but I’m stuck on two outcomes of Hari’s childhood:

NOTE: I have a headcanon in which the Potters are Indian, so James names his son Hari. I think I mentioned this before, if I didn’t, feel free to ask about it.

Hari is raised by his Aunt Petunia, but she leaves Vernon.

Petunia’s marriage starts falling apart when Lily dies.

Vernon didn’t let her go to her sister’s funeral because he was sure that the place would be crawling with ā€œfreaksā€. Even if Petunia begged, he would still prevent her from going.

Vernon made nasty comments about Lily and James’ death, saying that they’re two less freaks to worry about.

Eventually Petunia leaves her husband and moves back in with her parents (who are alive in this version).

Petunia decides to go to college, a decision supported by her parents since they promised to help her financially and with the boys.

She studies to become an English teacher.

She loves her job. Also, she might fall in love with the History teacher.

She remarries, and it’s a man who treats her right and is good with the boys.

Both boys are treated equally while with her.

Dudley and Hari get along well. Although whenever Dudley returns from his weekends at his father’s, they fight a lot.

Hari grows up knowing he’s a wizard and knowing (more or less, because Petunia didn’t have all the details) what had happened to his parents.

Many more…

Hari is raised by Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.

Remus, along with several other people who believed Sirius was innocent, start protesting and putting pressure on the Ministry so that they can give Sirius a proper trial.

Sirius is renamed innocent.

Dumbledore still refuses to hand Hari over to them, even though they were the rightful guardians of the child.

The last straw is when Dumbledore casually corrects them and says that Hari’s name has been changed to Harry.

They whitewashed his name. They were livid.

Remus and Sirius, along with some handpicked friends to help them, manage to kidnap Hari.

They take him to Wales, further away from Remus’ former home. They cast an insane amount of spells to hide themselves from Dumbledore. They were untraceable.

Other than the protections needed, they lived a muggle life.

They have other children (the names I’m still working out), there’s five kids in total.

Two of those children are werewolves, attacked at a young age by another wolf pack that’s not Fenrir Greyback. They—Remus, especially—wanted to bring them comfort when he found out about them.

Hari lives in a loud, chaotic household in the middle of nowhere.

Lyall Lupin eventually moves in with them because Remus worried for his father—the man was old and alone.

And many more…

NOTE: The outcome of the votings will determine the overall plot of Hari’s era. Choose wisely, what do you want to see?

Sex based oppression is real. If you can't see that then idk what to tell you.

I never said it wasn’t real. I have experienced it myself, and I know a lot of other people who have as well. It’s 100% real.

I just don’t understand why people think it’s okay to be transphobic when it has nothing to do with it. The logic just doesn’t make any sense.

Sex ≠ Gender

Have you ever considered just writing your own stuff rather than plagiarizing someone else's

I do write my own stuff, I just write fanfic on my spare time (which is a lot, these days). Also, as much as I hate it, credit for the HP series is still going to be given to her so I don’t get sued :)

Lol the book's murderer had a guy wearing a coat and hat that made it hard to tell who he was/what gender he was. There was literally nothing about him crossdressing or being trans. Maybe you should actually research stuff before parroting the crowd.

I found this link that I think you might benefit from it. It shows that racism and transphobia are very much present in the Strike series.

Also, someone else pointed out in a comment on my previous post (the link to their profile) another terrible fact: JK Rowling’s pen name for her newer books, Robert Galbraith, is actually the name of a man who pioneered Gay Conversion Therapies.

Upon hearing about this, I immediately looked it up and found that it was true. I picked this article because I thought it explained beautifully just how harmful Gay Conversion Therapies really were. While the author of the article seemed to be willing to chalk it up to a very unfortunate coincidence, I will not for the following reasons:

Let’s say she didn’t know Robert Galbraith was a real person, it was still JK Rowling’s responsibility to check whether her desired pen name was a real person or not.

After she ā€œfound outā€ about who this monster was, her only reaction was to claim she didn’t know and then continue using the pen name as if nothing. This is disgusting.

Is this enough research for you?

What made you guys first read Harry Potter?

I first read it because a girl I liked was a fan and I wanted to impress her šŸ™ƒ didn’t work, but now I’m stuck in this fandom heh

If you refuse to accept that the author has views that oppose yours and is still the author of the product you so care for, then you have no business investing in Harry Potter. You call her a bigot, yet who is the one who is being intolerant and hateful? Not Joanne. She talked about abuse and oppression against women and you and your ilk couldn't stand that she lives in the real world and has experienced real abuse based on her sex and that she knows a vast amount of other women do as well. So go ahead and be demeaning and bigoted (which means intolerant of others' beliefs), but stay away from Harry Potter. You are not welcome.

Hey Anon, firstly I would like to thank you for giving me the perfect opportunity to talk about JK Rowling and how harmful she is, and also why I personally don’t stand by her.

ā€œYou call her a bigot, yet who is the one being intolerant and hateful? Not Joanne.ā€

One of the loudest issues at the moment is the way she views transgender people. She has said before that people can dress however they like and love whoever they love, and honestly, she was set in the right direction by saying this. However, she turned right around and started invalidating trans people (particularly trans women) by saying that they’re not real women because they don’t face the same oppression as a cisgender woman.

Transgender women face a lot of oppression just by being trans (where they get constantly harassed, assaulted, and even killed), and they also get oppressed for being women (where they get constantly harassed, assaulted, belittled, and even killed).

So, keeping this in mind, JK Rowling has been supporting and investing in several platforms that are harmful for trans people. Is that not being intolerant and hateful?

The part of the fandom who oppose JK Rowling are the people who are (or should be) protecting trans people, who your beloved author is trying to eliminate. We are intolerant, yes, but only to the views that harms them.

Also, a little side note: I have also heard (though I don’t know if it was ultimately published or not) that she was writing a book about a man who dresses as a woman to kill people. Considering her transphobic views, what do you think she’s trying to do with that? How do you think people will take it?

Some other issues we face when reading the Harry Potter series is the racism, and ironically, misogyny.

We barely ever see any POC characters, and if we do, we always see some terrible stereotypes and really lazy attempts to portray them. As a POC myself, I’m always hurt by the lack of research she did while writing these side characters. It’s really disheartening.

As for the misogyny in the book, I find it ironic that we see so much of it when the author claims to be a feminist. You can’t be a feminist and also pit the majority of the female characters against each other simply because some of them are more feminine and emotional than others. Feminism isn’t only about equality, it’s also about standing together when we demand for said equality. If you write about girls hating each other simply because they like girly things, then you’re not a true feminist.

Also, on the same subject, the majority of the female characters’ plots revolved around men. Where’s the independence of these women? A lot of them were so badass, only for it to be ruined because they just had to revolve around men—even when it was totally out of character for them. We know nothing about the Chosen One’s own mother, which is one of the things that drives me absolutely mad.

These are all issues that come to mind at the moment, I might add more later.

ā€œShe talked about abuse and oppression against women and you and your ilk couldn’t stand that she lives in the real world and has experience real abuse based on het sex and that she knows a vast amount of other women do as well.ā€

I’m not sure what your definition of ā€œliving in the real worldā€ is, but here’s mine:

A person that can recognize their own oppression as well as the sufferings of others without having to invalidate them.

Are women oppressed? Yes, 100% they are. But does that give me the excuse to invalidate other people’s experiences as women? NO!

Also, I have experienced harassment, sexism, and injustice for being a woman (I identify as gender non-conforming, btw), too. I know of women who have been sexually violated, of women who have been abused, and mistreated because of their sex as well, most of them don’t invalidate transgender people. So your argument is irrelevant.

Also that logic doesn’t make any sense at all. Look at it this way: I have been deaf since the day I was born, and I have suffered immensely because of it. Hearing classmates (and people in general) would make my life a living hell—to the point where I couldn’t even think about school or leaving the house without suffering from a mental breakdown for months. Does that mean I’ll be hateful and invalidating to someone who became deaf later on in their lives? No, because they’re not related to this particular experience I’ve had with hearing people.

ā€œSo go ahead, and be demeaning and bigoted (which means intolerant of others’ beliefs), but stay away from Harry Potter. You are not welcomed.ā€

I don’t think I’m being demeaning, if anything, she is. And you too, since you’re so angry that I stand by protecting trans people (who are also human beings, in case it escaped your notice).

Also, thank you so much for explaining what bigoted means. If you hadn’t, my little pea brain would have worked itself to the point of exhaustion while trying to figure out what you mean.

Finally, it’s funny that you think you can tell me what to do. No, I’m not staying away from Harry Potter. In fact, I’ll rewrite the whole thing just because I can and want people to actually feel represented in the series. You can stay in your own lane and I will stay in mine. I don’t want to be welcomed in the TERF’s side of the fandom.

EDIT:

Why the Strike series is problematic + JKRoach’s pen name (with links)

writing fanfiction is just. i’m being so creative and original. i’m plagiarizing everyone by accident. i’m a genius. i’m cringe. i’m too angsty. i’m too cheesy. this is not in character. it doesn’t matter that it’s not in character because these are my characters now. i love my hobby. this is the worst possible use of my time. i’m seeking validation. i’m projecting my own personal problems onto this story and i’m barely hiding it. i know so many words and i’m using all of them wrong. im on tumblr posting about it instead of writing it.

I am really tempted to come up with my own fantasy religion and chuck it into the Harry Potter rewrite but at the same time, I know it’s going to create a lot of plot holes and/or complications that can be avoided if I just follow the Pagan traditions and beliefs. Ugh.

Harry Potter Rewrite: Religion.

The original Harry Potter series was heavily influenced by the Christian religion. I never thought it made much sense, so I decided to make it so that the majority (especially purebloods and half-bloods) practice paganism. They’ll have their own traditions and festivals and holidays.

There will be other students who don’t practice paganism, but that enjoy some of their holidays. So far, some of the students (in the Marauders’ Era, since that’s what I’m working on at the moment) who aren’t Pagans are:

1. James Potter—Hinduism

2. Peter Pettigrew—Atheist

3. Severus Snape—Atheist, but has Catholic leanings due to his muggle father

4. Lily Evans—Atheist, family is Catholic

Of course, other religions such as Judaism, Islam, and many more, will be included. I’m just currently doing my research on these religions so that I can portray them well. Any help or suggestion is welcomed.

Any thoughts?

Hey, so they’re making a Netflix Harry Potter.

With that in mind, we’re all gonna remember that JKR is a terf who has literally been cited by legislators engaged in legislation that actively harms trans people, and we’re not gonna give her any more money.

That means not streaming the new show on Netflix, because regardless of how much influence she has on the production, she gets paid for it.

We’re gonna make the show flop. We’re gonna show Warner Brothers that we don’t forget (of course, how would we forget, it isn’t as if she’s stopped), and that their business association with terfs is no longer profitable.

It is NOT like Lovecraft, because Lovecraft is very dead and his works are in the public domain. By consuming Lovecraft media, you are not giving any money to old Howard.

Sirius Black Headcanons.

FAMILY.

Sirius Black is half French and half Japanese.

Walburga Black was the one born and raised in Japan. Orion, is the one that’s French.

The Japanese side of the family is suppressed, to be forgotten, as demanded by the Blacks.

Sirius only knows a little bit of Japanese thanks to the family outcast, Uncle Alphard. Regulus also learned, but he knows a little less.

Sirius and Regulus used to be the same reckless, bold child. They were always standing up for each other no matter the consequences. It was them against the world.

Sirius and Regulus were secretly close up until the winter holidays of Sirius’ fifth year. They were supposed to run away together, but Orion had held Regulus back. Sirius thought that his younger brother had simply changed his mind.

SCHOOL/FRIENDS/ENEMIES.

During his first year, Sirius refused to be associated with his own House. He didn’t want to further disappoint his parents, not to mention that a part of him believed the Black values.

It wasn’t until his second year that Sirius realized that perhaps his family was wrong.

By third year, slurs were eliminated completely from his mind and vocabulary and he was working hard to fully let go of everything he had grown up in.

DISABILITY + MENTAL HEALTH.

Sirius is completely deaf on his left ear. His family was embarrassed to have a son with a disability, so they instilled in his mind that it was something to hide.

During the first few years at Hogwarts, Sirius would exhaust himself while trying to read lips without people noticing.

It was frustrating and humiliating whenever he missed something and he was forced to asked the person to repeat what they’d said.

Even after his friends found out about it, Sirius refused to acknowledge it. He would not be known as a pitiful, disabled kid.

Classes were difficult, especially if the professor had the tendency of walking around the classroom. Sirius would sometimes copy the notes off of James without saying anything.

James always noticed but let him do it.

Later on, a fully deaf kid arrived at Hogwarts and managed to teach Sirius to somewhat embrace his deafness. (Kinda debating whether this should be a part of my fic or not, please let me know what you think).

Sirius also suffered from childhood PTSD, especially after he ran away.

He would wake up in the middle of the night in pure terror, but he didn’t scream because in his mind, he’s still at Grimmauld Place, and they would have his head if he screamed so late at night. He was all trembles and whimpers and sweat and tears.

Each of the Marauders would take turns consoling him.

When Sirius started dating Remus, it was always him who would come. Eventually, they would just cuddle up together on the same bed.

Can you please give us more Luna in the rewrite? I think her story is very fun, and considering Pandora and Xenophelius existed roughly in the Maurderer Era, it could be cool to see how them and the Potters (and Longbottoms) got along

I can definitely try to work that in! I know that Pandora and Xenophilius will show up in my Marauders fic (which is part of the rewrite).

One thing is, Luna’s role in the story depends on what Hari’s childhood looks like, which is something I am yet to decide. I ask about it here. Please let me know what you think!

This could have been so perfect🄲 Does anyone know what happened to the OP or if they have another account where I can find them?

LOGICAL HOGWARTS - WIP

So I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. However whilst reading the series, one thing struck me above everything else - the way Hogwarts and the greater Wizarding World is seemingly set up just doesn’t make logical sense! Only one teacher per subject? With JKR telling us that there are approximately 1000 students at Hogwarts at any given time? 493 knuts per galleon? No Wizarding primary schools or higher education? So, me being the autistic Ravenclaw that I am, this took away from my enjoyment of the series. I needed it to make mathematical sense!

So I fixed it.

I have spend two years on and off coming up with a detailed overview of the school, from the number of total students and the male/female ratio, the number of students in every house, in every year, and how many could reasonably fit in one class at a time. Then I started on my class timetables. I had to appropriately plan every student’s schedule to make sure that no one had any overlapping classes, this ended up meaning manually writing down which subjects every student took and then sorting them alphabetically into classes based on the fact that I didn’t want more than 30 kids per class.

That still wasn’t enough though. I then had to figure out how we would get 1000 kids to school safely and efficiently, how we would sort them without making the entire school sit there for 3+ hours, how many professors would have to live at the school in order to provide adequate supervision for 1000 kids, a comprehensive list of school rules, an actual system of how many house points one would gain/lose…… I really dug myself into a hole and I couldn’t stop. In fact I’m still not done and I still can’t stop. There are SO many holes in this world.

Beyond this I have a whole alternate timeline that this whole thing is based on. Long story short, in my headcanon, the war ā€˜officially’ began with The Battle of the Department of Mysteries (which I have modernised to take place in June 2018) and ended in January 2020 with The Battle of Hogwarts, and then all students were required to repeat whatever year they were in during the war, because holy shit, the fact that they didn’t make any of them repeat a year after that mess is ridiculous. I’m surprised any of them even passed DADA with Umbridge!! Or that anyone accomplished anything the year Voldemort was literally in control of the school. Now I realise that modernising this story is probably an unpopular take - however I must stress how much I’m mainly doing this for myself so I can live out my Harry Potter fantasies in a relatable way lol. Feel free to ignore the modern times and just take my numbers to the original 90’s timeline if you’d rather do that than put yourself into the story like I do.

Also let it be known that I am in my 20’s and a mother of two… but my therapist knows about this and says it’s a HEALTY COPING MECHANISM…. soooooooo, guess I’m gonna just keep writing out this timeline and imaging what life would be like if I was 16 again woo! Anyway… Harry’s year would have to repeat Sixth Year. And believe me when I say the level of intricate detail in my alternate timeline is just wild. If you think I’m crazy for doing just this ā€˜Logical Hogwarts’ thing….. you don’t even want to see my alternate timeline. It’s wild. I’m way too invested in this. I’ve written over 30k words so far and I’m not stopping.

Also in my headcanon Hogwarts, everyone I like just lives because I’m doing this to escape my depression not to become even more depressed thank you very much! Snape, Lupin and Sirius Black all live and are put in a position where they have to run the DADA department together because, um, IMAGINE THE HILARITY!? Them hating each other, then eventually having to figure out how to work together? Reluctant forgiveness turned sincere apologies turned genuine friendship?? Also Remus and Sirius are so gay and Harry lives with them. Tonks has a different husband, they still both die and Teddy still exists. Harry is still Teddy’s godfather because of the genuine friendship he formed with Tonks. Dumbledore still dies. Originally he wasn’t going to but he just has to, I realised the story doesn’t work if he lives.

So, here we are. The second wave of Logical Hogwarts, re-vamped, rewritten in some parts, lots more added on! Two years and one more kid later! Feel free to take this for personal use or fanfiction or whatever, tag me or message me if you do I want to see your class timetable! Or if you want me to make you a class timetable I’ll do it!

(Disclaimer; I still look after my kids I promise. I just don’t sleep which is how I have time for this ;))

I’ve tried to make this as easy to read and navigate as I possibly can, so I’ve created a seperate page for every different aspect of this world. I didn’t like the look of the master post and scrolling for so long was overwhelming. So, here it goes…

Hogwarts student body (the numbers)

Hogwarts student body (the names) Hogwarts dormitories

Hogwarts prefects and head boy & girl Hogwarts staff & faculty Hogwarts School Rules (this was THE MOST fun to write) The Hogwarts Express (but it makes sense now)

The Sorting Ceremony (but it doesn’t suck now)

whats your opinion on percy weasley? i'd love to see him get fleshed out more in your rewrite!

You know, originally, I didn’t care much for him. But the other day someone asked for my opinions on the Weasleys (check it out here), and a discussion on Percy surged from there.

Now, I think that because Percy was a kid born when things were most intense in the war, there’s got to be a lot of repressed trauma. Like, Molly and Arthur already had Bill and Charlie, so that’s three kids they needed to protect from everything. Three kids who didn’t understand what was happening and why Mom and Dad are always so paranoid and stressed and exhausted. I talk about some of this here.

I think Molly taught her kids to be quiet at all times, especially when hiding, and to be obedient because otherwise bad things can happen. And I think Percy was the most obedient and quiet of the three, and he was often praised for it. But then, when the war ended, he got stuck in the war mindset.

While the world was slowly moving on and mending itself, Percy continued being the perfectly quiet and obedient child who followed the rules down to a T. His older brothers didn’t have time to dwell on the past, they were too busy helping Molly around the house, and the younger ones never had to experience what they did, not really, anyway.

So he gets made fun of when he fusses over the rules, or when he brags about his accomplishments (which I think he does because now he’s not being praised as much as he used to, and is now desperately competing with his siblings for that kind of attention), or when he says that he wants to work in the Ministry.

SO, I think I’m going to have Percy have that big fight with his parents, but I want to also find a way to make them understand that he wasn’t entirely wrong—his execution could’ve been better—but he was also hurting and he was very determined. He wanted to do good, he believed in the Ministry, whom he watched clean the streets after the war.

I think that’s it for now, any more ideas are welcomed :)

EDIT: I also want Percy to end up with Oliver Wood because I’ve been shipping them for so long and they’d just be an awesome couple. PERCIVER FOR LIFE!!

Introduction.

Hello, my name is Rio. I go by they/them, and am pan. I’m deaf, have been my entire life.

I write purely for fun, and I hope that one day I can share some of my original works. For now, though, I’ll be focusing on several projects I’ve been working on for some time within the Harry Potter universe.

NOTE: I do not, in any way, support JKRoach. I am a part of the fandom, anything that TERF says has no importance in my blog. Fuck her.

Introduction.

Harry Potter Rewrite.

I decided to rewrite the entire Harry Potter series. I’ll be fixing plot holes, diversifying, and overall bettering the story as I see fit.

I would love and appreciate it if you guys could help me out! Have any specific headcanon for any character? Let me know! Have ideas for an Era? Comment, Ask, or PM me!

I want to hear about any and all suggestions you may have.

NOTE #1: I used to identify as Anti-Snape, but I no longer do. I decided to interact with some Snape stans with an open mind when I made the choice of humanizing Snape. Now, I’m very neutral about young Snape, however, I won’t defend him as an adult. Hope that’s understandable. If you’ve got any headcanons on Snape as a young boy/teenager, feel free to send them over.

NOTE #2: Due to my personal headcanon that the Potters are Indian, I will be referring to Harry as Hari (I can elaborate on this, if you’d like).

Introduction.

Social Media.

I’ll be posting the rewrite (and maybe some other works) on Ao3 and Wattpad. You can subscribe and follow in the meantime.

You can follow my progress with the rewrite on my Twitter. I will be interacting with everyone there, and will be holding votes on different matters every Friday (ish).

If you’re looking to befriend me, you can follow me on Instagram and TikTok.

What you said about Percy following the rules is exactly what I had in mind.

Also, yes! Percy’s own father works at the Ministry, and I’m sure he must’ve been in awed every time Arthur returned home exhausted after a day of dealing with post-war problems.

I think Percy was a quite child - I love the older two, but I don't connect with their stories as much - because of the war. And nobody minded. Being quiet meant he could hide, being quiet meant he wasn't a liability. But then the war ended, and people saw him as weird.

Honestly, I agree. Being quiet isn’t a flaw or a liability. However, from what I understand, Percy was already thought of as weird since way before the war. There’s a lot of moments in the books where people mock him (mostly the twins). I think it wasn’t until after the war that people started trying to understand him.

Thank you SO much! This helped me a lot, I’ll be sure to read the fanfics you recommended during the weekend.

Also, if anyone else has an idea please let me know regardless of what you think of Snape. I will do my best to be as neutral to him as possible while considering the suggestion. As I mentioned in the ask, I don’t want to represent him as wholly bad.

Hello! I’m rewriting the HP series, starting from the Marauders’ Era.

I’m an Anti-Snape, but I don’t want to portray him as wholly bad like most people who think like me tend to do. I want to have reasons for Lily to stick with him and defend him for so many years other than him just being her childhood best friend or something. Really, I’m asking for some headcanons? Little moments that Snape and Lily treasure? Little quirks that Snape might have (he likes spicy food, loves bugs, literally anything) to help me humanize him more? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(To everyone who messages me or replies: if you’re respectful of my views on Snape, I’ll be sure to be respectful of yours!)

Thank you! @ottogatto suggested I come here for help, so I decided to give it a try.

Hello! First of all - best of luck! Rewriting the series from a specific era involves a lot of love and labour. ā¤ļøšŸŒ» Secondly, I appreciate you reaching out to humanise Snape a bit :) It's usually my pet peeves in Marauder fanfics that you really can't see what Lily was holding onto while her friend is being radicalised. There is something complex and dsyfunctional here and it says a lot about both of them. The fact that you want to put effort into characterising him instead of making him one note vessel to be bashed is commendable ā¤ļø

Anyway - things I see Snape and Lily do that lends some complexity to the friendship:

1. Snape is the one who told Lily she is a witch and is the one giving her the background of wizarding world (Azkaban conversation, wondering how Dumbledore sent the letter to Petunia etc etc).

Lily, when we first see her, has fairly good amount of control over her magic and is also a bit reckless with it (jumping off swings to float in air). I can see both her and Snape experiment with magic a bit. They are also both very good at Potions - so I can imagine child Snape and Lily practising a lot of wandless magic together and also have Potions bonding time as they grow older.

A fic that does this wonderfully and I recommend with my whole heart is Check the Spindle by @copper-dust

Here is an exchange from the fic that captures how I see the dynamic between 9 year old Lily and Snape, and why I see teenage Lily having difficulty letting go of him:

'Being in a place isn’t playing,’ Lily laughed. ā€˜Playing is playing. You have to pretend to be something and that everything is something else, like you could be the conductor, even, and pretend the trains are still running.’

Severus bit his lip. ā€˜I don’t normally...do pretend things.’

ā€˜Well, that’s silly.’

ā€˜It’s not silly!’ His voice sharpened like a pencil tapered to a point. ā€˜Being silly is like… doing things that aren’t real. I can do real magic, so I don’t have to play pretend.’

ā€˜Well, so can I!’ Lily was offended by the implication that her special gifts were in any way less real than his. ā€˜I make stuff move all the time without touching it. Just because I do make-believe doesn’t mean I can’t do…’ She lowered her voice, though there was no one around the deserted field. ā€˜Magic.’

ā€˜I didn’t say you couldn’t...couldn’t do magic. I know you can. I was the one who told you!’

She followed him out into the wheaty grass, away from the rails. He had turned away from her to face the gingerbread-coloured bricks of the distant foundry. ā€˜Why don’t you want to play anything?!’ insisted Lily, to his back. ā€˜I thought you wanted to be friends!’

ā€˜Because I don’t know how, alright?

2. I usually take the cue from Harry's relationship with the Half Blood Prince textbook as a mirror for Lily's own friendship with Snape. When Harry is shocked by Sectumsempra ("he felt like a beloved pet had gone savage"), I see a more intense version of this playing out between them. Harry thinks of the Prince as a "clever boy who had helped him" - and I definitely see Snape's cleverness as part of the draw for Lily.

The volatility and ambiguity of her friendship with Snape and when she loses him to his bigotry and radicalisation, in my head, plays a part of why she is drawn to James, who is so vocally militant about his progressive politics. She feels safe with James - James won't hurt her by something that is a part of her identity, in her head. There is a wound in Lily - with regard to both Snape and Petunia.

(I also recommend work by acciosalmon - she captures the bittersweetness of the friendship without toning down any flaws. And although Snape only appears in a cameo, I thought @izzythehutt also captured the dynamic well in her Sirius-centric AU)

I also talk about a more flawed Lily here

3. Snape loves his mother, but hates his father. He identifies as half a "Prince" - his mother's maiden name. We also see him wearing her clothes - I read this as a defiance against his abusive father (and also the Snapes are dirt poor, so if Snape wants a hand me down, he will only take his mother's). I go back and forth on whether he takes Lily home at any point - but I personally see him as too ashamed of his home, compared to a more well off Lily. I do see Lily pushing a bit to understand her angry, sullen friend more. I talk about breakdown of their friendship here

4. I can see him hoard rare Potion ingredients and be super enthusiastic about Lucius Malfoy's dark objects collection in his manor. (he will think Lucius taste in peacocks is garish and kinda funny - which I think he will unthinkingly bitch about to Lily, and Lily won't like the implications of him hanging out with Malfoy). She may share his enthusiasm for rare Potion ingredients too. And yes, I think he will love bugs too. (btw, the Malfoys genuinely regard Snape as their friend and Snape reacts unconsciously when Harry names Lucius as a Death Eater, Narcissa knows where he lives and asks him to save her son's life - there is a relationship there, even though Snape is technically betraying their ideology by being in the Order)

5. He smokes ( he is self destructive, and doesn't take care of himself, so his habits are combination of depressive neglect and outright destruction). He enjoys reading - especially rare academic journals. If he wasn't radicalised and went down the path he did, I can see him turning into a reclusive researcher as an adult. So I tend to give him reclusive researcher interests. Snape hyper-identifies with magic and is very interested in expansion of his understanding and knowledge of it. I talk about Snape's draw towards powerful men with regard to his attachment trauma here

Also recommend The Atoners by @copper-dust for difficult teenage Snape interactions, but still in keeping with his humanity and guilt.

6. He is very, very aware of his social standing and class! @floreatcastellumposts captures this in a wonderful paragraph in her fic Phyrric:

She’d let Potter call the baby Harry, he’d heard, and he was sure, somehow, that it was Potter that had come up with the name. It felt like a Potter name - on the surface common and friendly and non-threatening, but when you stopped and thought about it, it was usually still just posh boys that were called things like James and Harry and Thomas and William and John and Richard and David and Edward. Kingly sort of names, princely - royal. Just as pretentious as Latin, but with the added sanctimony of an attempt at approachability or equality.

Also the quote that best sums him up is "a child weaned on poison considers harm comfort"

Feel free to chat with me in case you have any more questions. And good luck once again! ā¤ļø

so you write on ao3

I have an account, but I haven’t posted anything yet. You can find me by the same username (thesoftrainbows).

I also have Wattpad (ew, I know), and will probably also post my HP Rewrite in FanFiction.net if I figure out how it works.

All of these accounts have the same username.

OH also, Twitter and Instagram are under the same name :)

Can someone please teach me how to add links in that pretty, organized way I’ve seen some people do? I don’t know how to explain it, but like you can name the link whatever you want and it’s not that long-ass jumble of letters and numbers.

You know, what you said made me think of a lot of devastating stuff.

Just imagine baby Percy wanting to play but his parents are overwhelmed with the war and reject him every time.

In a war, I’m pretty sure that there’s going to be a lot of scary moments: nearby fights, the distant sounds of people screaming, Molly hysterically counting her children before hiding together in a bathroom while Arthur makes sure the DEs are not near.

Percy was quiet because that’s how Molly and Arthur told him to be because of the war. He was the best at being quiet and perfectly obedient, he was always praised for it.

The war ends when he’s five years old and he has to witness his mother breaking down and every now and then because the memories are still haunting her. He’s helpless and anxious because he doesn’t know how to comfort her, this doesn’t seem the type of situation where a bandaid and a kiss would make it better.

Percy never forgot. While Bill and Charlie were thrusted into the substitute parents role, therefore too busy to dwell on the past, Percy was stuck. He watched the world move on without him.

He was no longer needed to be quiet. He no longer needed to be completely obedient. He no longer needed to be strong. But Percy doesn’t know how to not do that.

Now he’s strange.

Percy, the boy who doesn’t come out and play with his brothers.

Percy, the boy who yells at his brothers when they become too noisy for him to read.

Percy, who always tells on his siblings when doing something wrong.

Percy, who decided to work for the Ministry from a young age because he always saw them on the streets trying to clean the aftermath of the war.

Percy Weasley, y’all.

Me, writing a Genderfluid Sirius Black, and a trans woman Marlene:

i don’t get people in this fandom that get mad or frustrated by other fans who for example think that sirius dressed both feminine and masculine because ā€œit’s not realistic he lived in the 70sā€ BRUH he’s literally a fictional wizard and basically everything about him is fan made and you want to talk about what’s ā€œrealisticā€ ????

I’m Puerto Rican.

Esquimalitos

Carritos

MoƱos/MoƱitos

I have a question. What do you call these three things? They have different names depending on where you live, and I’m curious.

I like that it’s pretty much canon at this point, really. Like you said, they’re not enemies, and that is really refreshing.

Oh lord, now I’m gonna spiral thinking about Sirius and Snape.

Jeverus/Snames is a thing?

I just found out that there are people who ship James Potter with Snape and I don’t know how to deal with it. I’m not trying to shame anyone, but you’ve got Marauder stans and Snape stans and then you’ve got people who think they belong together? How? Where’s the logic behind that? I’m genuinely curious.

Wait, if you're still taking suggestions, can you do a Slytherin-Gryffindor friendship? It doesn't have to be Draco because it'll take a lot of rewiring to make that work, but maybe someone like Millicent who isn't as hard-headed? Or maybe more Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff rep, especially more inter-house friendships. I think it'll be funny if at some point, one of them goes to sit at another house's table because "they're my friend 😐 and there's no rule against it except for like on three days of the year. stop looking at me weird"

Yes, I’m still taking suggestions!

I actually plan on having some OCs in my rewrite because most of the Slytherins in the books are explicitly part of Malfoy’s gang, therefore wannabe DEs. But, I can definitely try and have someone like Millicent be friends with another student of a different House/Gryffindor (they’d have to be pureblood, but yes).

As for the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw rep, I’ve already developed several students for both Houses for the Marauders and Golden Eras. I think they’d be so fun to write. I’m so excited!
