Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic. This chapel in the Sedlec suburb of the city of Kutna Hora, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic is one of the most unique in the world: the interior is decorated entirely with human bones.

In the mid-12th century, a Catholic monastery was established in Kunta Hora by the Order of Cistercian Monks. It was the first Cistercian abbey in Bohemia and remained in operation until it was dissolved in 1783. In 1278, Henry - the Abbott of the Monastery - was sent to the Holy Land by King Ottokar II of Bohemia. There he collected soil from the area outside Jerusalem where Jesus was supposedly crucified. When he returned home, he scattered this holy soil in the Abby cemetery. Word of this pious act soon spread, making the cemetery a desirable place to be buried for people throughout Central Europe. This, in addition to the Black Death in the 14th century and the Hussite Wars in the 15th century, led to many thousands being buried in the cemetery, leading it to be vastly expanded. Around 1400, a new gothic cathedral was built on the cemetery grounds. The basement of this chapel was used as an ossuary - a vessel or site used for the storing of human remains. Over 40,000 bodies were exhumed to make room in the cemetery and their bones were placed in unorganized heaps within the ossuary.

In 1870, the Schwarzenberg family - a noble family that were patrons of the church - hired local woodcarver Frantisek Rint to organize the bones into a much more aesthetically pleasing arrangement. The results of his work are absolutely astounding. The decorations and furnishings of the chapel are made completely out of human bones. These decorations include four massive bell-shaped mounds, chandelier, an altar, a coat of arms of the House of Schwarzenberg, and a signature of Rint by the front entrance. The chapel has a earned the name "The Chruch of Bones" and receives as many as 200,000 visitors annually.

Krkonoše Mountains - Czech Republic

Owl Waterfall (4.2 m) and Veil Waterfall (8.2 m)

I practically grew up in Krkonoše Mountains, but I still had no clue these beautiful secluded places existed until I found them this summer. My country may be small and many people may not even know it exists, but it’s profoundly beautiful.

Textures of the sleepy forest, cold air, wind running through the naked branches, czech nature, cold spring days, easter holidays, dirty shoes, taking pictures, feeling the creative rush, tones of brown, red noses and calmness.

Prague: Continuing…

In Prague, it’s beautiful everywhere and you will enjoy walking! Even if you could easily spend a whole week in the city, I had enough of three days. The morning I arrived, I dropped my backpack immediately and I crossed Charles Bridge to go see Prague Castle in Lesser Town. Since I’m more of an outside person than a museum person, I spent the whole day walking in the small streets around the castle and I came back in the Old Town Square to eat. You’re going to love those buildings which are representatives of Gothic architecture (like the astronomical clock) and I suggest you try to find David Cerny’s controversial sculptures hidden in the city! Unfortunately, I only had one day of sun and it was raining on the second day, but that didn’t stop me from renting a bike to ride along the Vltava River and reach the New Town to see the dancing building. I also went to Petrin Hill for fresh air and since I had a little extra time on the third day, I took a train to go see the Sedlec ossuary in Kutna Hora. It’s worth it if you’ve never seen so many human skeletons, but the journey was a little long for such a short visit. Prague is definitely a must-see city and you don’t even have to plan your stay before going there; just walk the streets and you’ll see great things everywhere!

Prague: Me, Myself And A Backpack

I had been told that Prague was awesome, so I had high expectations. I took an overnight train from Warsaw and for those who are afraid they wouldn’t sleep well in an overnight train…well you’re not true backpackers! You can save money by doing that and all you need is a mask, earplugs and wine before going to sleep (please reserve a bed and not a seat or you’ll spend the worst night of your life) That way, you arrive early and well rested in a new city, and let me tell you that waking up in Prague is a nice feeling! I booked a bed in a hostel called Hostel DownTown which was cheap, clean, convenient, and offered a nice breakfast as well as a nice view of Prague Castle. The name speaks for itself; the location is perfect (in the Old Town)! Even in small cities like Prague, I tend to book my hostels the closest to the ‘’city center’’ because I’m not a fan of public transportations. I walk a lot... maybe too much (I have to walk my heavy meals off), but that way I discover streets and building I would miss if I was stuck in a bus … to be continued…
