Hello everyone!
Just a quick notice, I'll be somewhere with bad wifi for most of the next 3 days, so I'm not sure if the Chuuya's per day will post properly. They're all scheduled though, and either way I'll br back fairly soon- so just an FYI if Chuuya's come through at random times of day or don't come at all- I will be back !
Here it is folks:
My definitive ranking of my least favorite bodies of water! These are ranked from least to most scary (1/10 is okay, 10/10 gives me nightmares). I’m sorry this post is long, I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this.
The Great Blue Hole, Belize
I’ve been here! I have snorkeled over this thing! It is terrifying! The water around the hole is so shallow you can’t even swim over the coral without bumping it, and then there’s a little slope down, and then it just fucking drops off into the abyss! When you’re over the hole the water temperature drops like 10 degrees and it’s midnight blue even when you’re right by the surface. Anyway. The Great Blue Hole is a massive underwater cave, and its roughly 410 feet deep. Overall, it’s a relatively safe area to swim. It’s a popular tourist attraction and recreational divers can even go down and explore some of the caves. People do die at the Blue Hole, but it is generally from a lack of diving experience rather than anything sinister going on down in the depths. My rating for this one is 1/10 because I’ve been here and although it’s kinda freaky it’s really not that bad.
Lake Baikal, Russia
When I want to give myself a scare I look at the depth diagram of this lake. It’s so deep because it’s not a regular lake, it’s a Rift Valley, A massive crack in the earth’s crust where the continental plates are pulling apart. It’s over 5,000 feet deep and contains one-fifth of all freshwater on Earth. Luckily, its not any more deadly than a normal lake. It just happens to be very, very, freakishly deep. My rating for this lake is a 2/10 because I really hate looking at the depth charts but just looking at the lake itself isn’t that scary.
Jacob’s Well, Texas
This “well” is actually the opening to an underwater cave system. It’s roughly 120 feet deep, surrounded by very shallow water. This area is safe to swim in, but diving into the well can be deadly. The cave system below has false exits and narrow passages, resulting in multiple divers getting trapped and dying. My rating is a 3/10, because although I hate seeing that drop into the abyss it’s a pretty safe place to swim as long as you don’t go down into the cave (which I sure as shit won’t).
The Devil’s Kettle, Minnesota
This is an area in the Brule River where half the river just disappears. It literally falls into a hole and is never seen again. Scientists have dropped in dye, ping pong balls, and other things to try and figure out where it goes, and the things they drop in never resurface. Rating is 4/10 because Sometimes I worry I’m going to fall into it.
Flathead Lake, Montana
Everyone has probably seen this picture accompanied by a description about how this lake is actually hundreds of feet deep but just looks shallow because the water is so clear. If that were the case, this would definitely rank higher, but that claim is mostly bull. Look at the shadow of the raft. If it were hundreds of feet deep, the shadow would look like a tiny speck. Flathead lake does get very deep, but the spot the picture was taken in is fairly shallow. You can’t see the bottom in the deep parts. However, having freakishly clear water means you can see exactly where the sandy bottom drops off into blackness, so this still ranks a 5/10.
The Lower Congo River, multiple countries
Most of the Congo is a pretty normal, if large, River. In the lower section of it, however, lurks a disturbing surprise: massive underwater canyons that plunge down to 720 feet. The fish that live down there resemble cave fish, having no color, no eyes, and special sensory organs to find their way in the dark. These canyons are so sheer that they create massive rapids, wild currents and vortexes that can very easily kill you if you fall in. A solid 6/10, would not go there.
Little Crater Lake, Oregon
On first glance this lake doesn’t look too scary. It ranks this high because I really don’t like the sheer drop off and how clear it is (because it shows you exactly how deep it goes). This lake is about 100 feet across and 45 feet deep, and I strongly feel that this is too deep for such a small lake. Also, the water is freezing, and if you fall into the lake your muscles will seize up and you’ll sink and drown. I don’t like that either. 7/10.
Grand Turk 7,000 ft drop off
No. 8/10. I hate it.
Gulf of Corryvreckan, Scotland
Due to a quirk in the sea floor, there is a permanent whirlpool here. This isn’t one of those things that looks scary but actually won’t hurt you, either. It absolutely will suck you down if you get too close. Scientists threw a mannequin with a depth gauge into it and when it was recovered the gauge showed it went down to over 600 feet. If you fall into this whirlpool you will die. 9/10 because this seems like something that should only be in movies.
The Bolton Strid, England
This looks like an adorable little creek in the English countryside but it’s not. Its really not. Statistically speaking, this is the most deadly body of water in the world. It has a 100% mortality rate. There is no recorded case of anyone falling into this river and coming out alive. This is because, a little ways upstream, this isn’t a cute little creek. It’s the River Wharfe, a river approximately 30 feet wide. This river is forced through a tiny crack in the earth, essentially turning it on its side. Now, instead of being 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep, it’s 6 feet wide and 30 feet deep (estimated, because no one actually knows how deep the Strid is). The currents are deadly fast. The banks are extremely undercut and the river has created caves, tunnels and holes for things (like bodies) to get trapped in. The innocent appearance of the Strid makes this place a death trap, because people assume it’s only knee-deep and step in to never be seen again. I hate this river. I have nightmares about it. I will never go to England just because I don’t want to be in the same country as this people-swallowing stream. 10/10, I live in constant fear of this place.
Honorable mention: The Quarry, Pennsylvania
I don’t know if that’s it’s actual name. This lake gets an honorable mention not because it’s particularly deep or dangerous, but it’s where I almost drowned during a scuba diving accident.
Edit: I’ve looked up the name of the quarry, it’s called Crusty’s Quarry and is privately owned and only used for training purposes, not recreational diving.

Magpies are my favourite bird (kingfishers and rosellas are close behind), hell I even named myself Corvid because of them but my favourite type of Magpie is the Australian Magpie which isn’t even a Corvid, but a butcherbird, so I believe they should be called fakepie’s from now on

That's a super interesting subject you brought up though 👀
Turns out a simple way to tell if most songbirds are corvids (with the exception of Rooks and Grey Crows) is the presence of ‘nasal bristles’ on the bird’s upper bill (basically the small feathers on the top beak). Australian Magpies, Grackles, and Butcherbirds look quite similar to corvids, but do not have this plumage! (and you can tell their beak shape is a bit straighter and more triangular)
And you’re right, Australian Magpies (or fakepies hehe) are *super* closely related to butcherbirds (though they are still classified as a different genus)
And lastly, I leave you with a Bonus Fun Fact: all corvids and songbirds are thought to have originated in Australia! So ALL magpies are technically australian >:]

A beginner's guide
Bonjour! Is there a list of things that a french beginner should learn, is there a specific order to learn topics in french? Also, love your blog, it helps me a lot.

Hello, thanks love you too! Here's roughly how to proceed:
#1. Genders.
Nouns, adjectives, determiners and past participles in French are either masculine or feminine. There is no neutral.
Known: LE/LA/L’ (+ vowel) + singular, LES + plural (The girl)
Unknown: UN/UNE + singular, DES + plural (A cat)
Uncountable: DU/DE LA + singular, DES + plural (Sugar)
How do I know what gender an item is?
Those that end with a consonant are likely masculine (Un éléphant), those that end with an -e likely feminine (Une girafe), especially if it follows a couple of the same consonant (Une tasse). A noun or adjective can be ‘gender-neutral’, or épicène (Juge, Drôle). There are obviously exceptions (Nation, Incendie).
What’s an uncountable item?
It’s a group of items that are either too small or too large to be counted: fruit, sugar, flour, people, etc (ex: Du sable, Des gens).
Let’s practice: Le facteur et la boulangère sont mariés. La ministre est sortie. Un chien aboie dehors. J’ai mangé du pain.
#2. Numbers.
To turn a singular into a plural, adding an -s is your most popular option. It can also be an -x (Bijou, Feu), nothing if the singular ends in -z, -s, -x (Nez); some words only exist as plurals (Ciseaux). There are a few irregulars (Oeil/yeux, Monsieur/messieurs, Madame/mesdames, Animal/animaux).
Let’s practice: J’ai deux petits frères qui sont nés (past participle) en 1998. J’ai un chat sur les genoux. Il y a des noix dans mes gâteaux. Mes yeux sont noirs.
#3. Verbs.
Verbs belong to one of three groups: -er except Aller (90%), -ir with a few exceptions, and the bin (auxiliaries Être and Avoir, Aller, -re, -oir, -ir exceptions). They can be modal (Should) or reflexive: preceded by an object pronoun (Je m’appelle).
The most useful verbs are:
Être: to be, avoir: to have, faire: to do/make, dire: to say, pouvoir: can, aller: to go, voir: to see, savoir: to know, vouloir: want, venir: to come, falloir: to have to, devoir: must, croire: to believe, trouver: to find, donner: to give, prendre: to take, mettre: to put down/place, laisser: to let, to need: avoir besoin de (...)
#4. Tenses.
The most useful tenses are:
Indicative present (J'aime le fromage - I like cheese)
Imperfect (J'aimais le fromage - I liked cheese)
Perfect (J'ai aimé le fromage - I have liked cheese)
Future (J'aimerai le fromage - I will like cheese)
Present conditional (J'aimerais le fromage - I would like cheese)
Present subjunctive (Je veux que tu prennes le fromage - I want you to take the cheese) triggered by certain verbs + que.
N.B.: There are irregular past participles (Être: été, Avoir: eu, Voir: vu, etc.).
Let’s practice: Je ne sais pas. Il dessinait bien. Nous sommes venus. Ils te verront quand ils reviendront. Vous seriez partis tôt.
#5. Function words.
Personal pronouns: Tu manges du pain
Demonstrative pronouns: Celui de ma soeur est mieux
Possessive determiners: C'est ton chien
Contracted words: Elle est au parc
Coordinating conjunctions: J'y vais mais j'ai peur
Subordinating conjunctions: Je demanderai quand il rentrera
Linkers: On se voit plus tard
Let’s practice: Je crois qu’elle sera à l’heure mais je peux me tromper. Pourquoi est-ce que tu pars? Nous reviendrons plus tard, quand il fera plus beau. Vous ne devez pas être en retard sans raison. C’est là, celle à droite.

As you're mastering those, start practising.
Listen to music, podcasts, books while looking at the transcription - don't translate, get used to the pronunciation and the word chewing. Record yourself reading.
Then, start reading. I recommend starting with children's literature, especially books you already know in English. Things like Le petit prince or Perrault's fairytales should be accessible.
Use Reverso and Deepl as if you were paid to.
Study the pronunciation posts. The devil is in the details.
Learn vocabulary every week. Avoid translating English word by word, it's often a fool's bet; make a simpler sentence instead.

one of the most interesting ( and sad ) true crime cases i've read about was that of Andy , the footless goose . Andy was born in the late 80s in Nebraska and died in '91 , killed in a murder .
Andy was born without feet and had gone through several different attempts to give him mobility , including "a skateboard-like prosthesis" . none worked . Andy's owner then "fitted [him] with [special] baby-sized shoes" , which gave Andy the mobility of a typical goose .
Andy became a role-model for disabled kids ( since his shoes allowed him to walk , swim and fly with the efficiency of a typical goose ) .
Andy's story is a sad one , ending with him being found dead in a local park , dismembered . the local government stated that they had found the perpetrator but opted to not reveal their identity .

The Brackets Are Finally Here!
Brackets for the first round are located in the same google sheets document as our competitors list (the losers brackets pairings will be located there as well!!) you can navigate to the brackets by clicking the "ROUND ONE" tab in the bottom left of the screen!
Posting of the polls will start on May 13th, and we will be posting 10 polls a day at 12PM CST, over the span of a week to prevent clutter!! each poll will last one week, and once the final poll ends, there will be a two week break before the next polls are posted, to allow us cohosts plenty of time to compile the new brackets, queue polls, and for competitors to make new propaganda!
polls will be posted in the order they were generated, as shown in the document!
please note that all match ups are final! we are no longer accepting any new ocs, nor will we be moving ocs around, for any reason!
if -for any reason- you would like for your oc to be pulled from the brackets, or if you dont want your oc to be put into the losers bracket, so on and so forth, please reach out to us non-anonymously! we want this event to be stress-free and fun!

final confirmations + schedule adjustment!
hello again everyone, hope you are all well and excited for the tourney! we have an important update regarding our planned schedule.
due to the number of competitors (about three times as many as we predicted, nearly 150 individual participants!) we are taking a little extra time to get things sorted up front, and ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible during the event.
if you are a competitor and have not yet done so, please confirm your name, oc name, and intro post url on our participants sheet. if anything is incorrect, let us know ASAP. the deadline for this is may 9th, after which we cannot make changes!
🗓️ REVISED schedule of events 🗓️
competitor confirmation window: until may 9th brackets announced: may 10th voting begins: may 13th bracket length: 1 week next bracket announced: 1 week after polling ends total break length: 2 weeks after polling ends due to the size of the tournament, poll posts will be staggered over several days. each voting bracket will last One Week with public tumblr polls on the @kirbyoctournament blog. this is the longest they can be. there will be a revised 2 WEEKS between polls. one week after polls are closed, the next brackets will be announced, and after the second week the following polls will begin to go live. this extended break gives participants time to wind down, create additional propaganda (including their new opponent, if they wish), and gives us as hosts the time needed to make the number of polls. as the tournament progresses, this break length may reduce, as we'll have less polls to make! we will be sure to let you know!
we appreciate your patience with the new schedule, and apologize for the slight delay in start time. because all polls -now numbering over 70 for the first bracket- will be hand-made and double checked by only two people, we need some extra time to ensure there are no mistakes!
we are also being as lenient as we can to welcome several late-comer entries, as we don't want folks to miss out! if this is you, please be aware the firm and final deadline is 11:59pm CST on the 5th of may. we cannot accept any more entries after that point!
